ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Emily Johnson (SR/Grandville, Mich.) scored a program record six goals and goalkeeper Stephanie Mackley (SR/Livonia, Mich.) tied a school record with 17 saves, but it wasn't enough as the Madonna University women's lacrosse team fell to Concordia University-Ann Arbor 9-7 in Ann Arbor.
"This was another hard fought game by our team," said Crusaders Head Coach Dan Tesky. "Unfortunately we had too many mental errors and failed to execute our game plan. That being said, Emily and Stephanie played amazing games. When we have two players who are playing the way they did today, we shouldn't be losing games."
The Cardinals (3-6, 2-6 WHAC) won the opening draw, but Mackley recorded a save on the home team's first shot, which the Crusaders (0-9, 0-7 WHAC) turned into a successful clear, and Johnson netted her first goal less than two minutes into the contest.
Concordia tied the score 31 seconds later, but a goal at 24:13 by Johnson put MU back in front, 2-1. A pair of Cardinal tallies gave the home team some momentum, but Jerilyn Chapp (FR/New Boston, Mich.) ended the home team's scoring run with another Crusader goal to tie the game.
Johnson's third goal of the half put the Blue and Gold back in front, but a goal with 2:28 left in the half tied the score at 4-4 entering the break.
Concordia began the second half with four consecutive goals before Johnson took over. The Madonna senior scored three of the final four goals in the contest and almost single handedly led the Crusaders to a win.
Madonna won six draw controls, had 18 clears, attempted 19 shots and collected 15 groundballs. The Crusaders converted 2-of-4 free-position shots while Mackley held the home team to a 1-for-14 mark from the 8-meter arc.
Johnson finished with six goals on eight shots to go with one groundball and three draw controls. Victoria Guardiola (FR/Lansing, Mich.) led Madonna with four groundballs while four Crusaders registered a caused turnover.
The Crusaders return to the Madonna Athletics Complex on Wednesday, Apr. 5 when they host Lourdes University at 5 p.m. Live coverage of the contest will be available on the Madonna Athletics Network at madonnacrusaders.com/live.
