LIVONIA, Mich. – The upstart Madonna University women's lacrosse team put four shots on net and Sarah Carlson (SR/Romulus, Mich.) netted her second career goal as the Crusaders fell to third-ranked Indiana Tech 19-1 at the Madonna Athletics Complex on Monday night.
"Being our first game against a non-first year program, and a ranked opponent, our goal was to come out and compete for the whole 60 minutes," said Madonna Head Coach Dan Tesky. "We knew it was going to be a hard fought game for us mentally and physically and that's exactly what it was."
The Warriors scored 10 seconds into the contest and tallied nine unanswered goals to open a 9-0 lead before Carlson got the Crusaders on the board with a free position goal. Tech added 10 more goals, six in the second half, for the win.
"I'm proud that we did not quit and played to the final whistle," added Tesky. "We've seen what it's like to compete against a ranked opponent now and have a better idea of where we need to get to moving forward."
Madonna converted six of nine clear attempts, scored on their lone free position attempt and had 15 groundballs in the contest. Goalkeeper Stephanie Mackley(SR/Livonia, Mich.) was impressive in net as she made several stellar saves, which included four stops on free position attempts, totaling 15 on the day.
The win is the seventh of the year for the Warriors who move to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in league play while the Crusaders fall to 0-4 in 2017 and 0-2 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Madonna will have a day off before traveling to Southfield, Mich. to face the second-ranked Lawrence Tech Blue Devils. Opening draw is 5 p.m.
