LIVONIA, Mich. – After more than two decades of dedicated service to Madonna University Athletics, longtime head coach and assistant coach
Patrick Daugherty has announced his resignation from coaching, effective June 30, 2026.
Since joining Madonna in 2004, Daugherty has served as the head coach of the men's and women's cross country programs, establishing a tradition of excellence while helping student-athletes succeed both in competition and in the classroom. In addition to leading the cross country programs, Daugherty served as Madonna's head track and field coach from 2016-18 before continuing as an assistant coach for the men's and women's track and field teams from 2019-26.
"We are grateful for Coach Daugherty's longstanding commitment to Madonna University and Madonna Athletics. His work has left an incredible legacy of excellence for all who follow," said Athletic Director Noel Emenhiser. "Coach Daugherty's impact has been felt throughout the Madonna University community, and especially by those who had the opportunity to work directly with him."
During a distinguished coaching career, Daugherty helped guide Madonna Athletics to some of its most memorable achievements. Among the highlights was leading the women's cross country team to the 2019 NAIA National Championship, a historic accomplishment for the program. Daugherty also played a key role as an assistant coach for the Crusaders' 2021 Men's Outdoor Track and Field National Championship team.
"It's been a pleasure working beside Coach Patrick Daugherty," said Head Men's and Women's Track and Field Coach Stacy Latnie. "His impact in starting Madonna University's cross country and track and field programs, winning back-to-back conference championships, a team national championship, and National Coach of the Year honors has set a standard that our program will always strive to uphold. We are grateful for the years of service, leadership, and championship culture he helped build."
While the championships and accolades stand among the program's greatest achievements, Daugherty said the relationships built throughout the journey are what will be remembered most.
"Serving Madonna University has been one of the greatest privileges of my professional career," said Coach Daugherty. "I have been fortunate to work alongside outstanding student-athletes, coaches, administrators, alumni, and supporters throughout the years. Watching young men and women grow into successful graduates and leaders has been the most rewarding aspect of my career."
Over 22 years, Daugherty helped develop countless student-athletes while fostering a culture of commitment, perseverance, and academic success. Their impact extended far beyond competition, leaving a lasting mark on generations of Crusaders.
"Madonna University has been more than a workplace—it has been a community and a second home," Coach Daugherty added. "I will always cherish the memories, friendships, and experiences that have been part of this journey. I leave with tremendous pride in what we have accomplished together and with confidence that Madonna University's athletic programs will continue to thrive in the years ahead."
Madonna University Athletics extends its sincere gratitude to Patrick Daugherty for more than two decades of leadership, dedication, and service to the university, its student-athletes, and the Crusader community.
The university wishes Coach Daugherty all the best and thanks him for his lasting contributions to Madonna Athletics.
