Crusaders Dominate in Sweep of Cougars

LIVONIA, MICH. - Madonna put the game away early Saturday, scoring four times in the first inning and never looking back in a 10-0 softball win over Cleary (MI).

GAME 1:
The decisive stretch came immediately. The Crusaders took advantage of traffic on the bases and a Cleary error to build a 4-0 lead in the opening inning. Rylee Fitzpatrick reached on an error that brought home Regan Finkbeiner for the first run, and Payden Whitmore followed later with a two-run single to left field that scored Ella Thomas and Carson Kulhmann. Madonna added three more runs in the second to make it 7-0, with Kulhmann doubling to left field to drive in a run and extend the margin.
Madonna finished with 10 hits and six walks in five innings, pressuring Cleary starter Kami Linton throughout the afternoon. Linton was charged with the loss after allowing 10 runs, six earned, on 10 hits with six walks and four wild pitches. The Crusaders also capitalized on Cleary's two errors and kept innings moving with disciplined at-bats, striking out only once as a team.
Several Madonna hitters turned in productive games. Fitzpatrick scored twice and drove in two runs. Thomas went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Kulhmann finished with a double, a run and two RBIs. In the fourth, Faith Cramton doubled to right-center to open another rally as Madonna pushed across three more runs to reach the 10-0 final margin.
In the circle, Camille Oyer and Anna Battagin combined on the five-inning shutout. Oyer worked the first two innings, allowing three hits and striking out three. Battagin handled the final three innings and helped close out the win after entering in the third, when she struck out two batters to keep Cleary from building momentum. Madonna's defense backed the pitching staff with an error-free game.
Cleary finished with five hits and left six runners on base. Its best late chance came in the fifth, when Grace Polega doubled down the right-field line, but the shutout remained intact. Madonna improved its day by controlling the game from the first inning on and ending it with another clean defensive frame.

GAME 2:
Madonna put the game away with a three-run fourth inning and a two-run double from Faith Cramton in the fifth, beating Cleary 9-0 in five innings Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders backed a one-hit shutout from Sara Austin and steadily built separation after taking the lead in the bottom of the first.
Madonna opened the scoring when Regan Finkbeiner reached on a bunt single, stole second and later came home on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead. The Crusaders then broke the game open in the third. Jessica Dunkel delivered the biggest swing of the inning, lining a two-run double to left-center, and Chelsea Weatherford added a sacrifice fly to push the advantage to 4-0.
The fourth inning gave Madonna even more room. Ashley Rosiewicz started the rally with a triple to right-center, and Rylee Fitzpatrick followed with an RBI double up the middle. Dunkel came through again with an RBI single, and after another wild pitch moved runners along, Olivia Salinas capped the inning with a sacrifice fly as the lead grew to 7-0.
Cramton ended it in the fifth. Her two-run double to center scored the final runs and brought the margin to 9-0, enforcing the run rule. Madonna finished with 10 hits and six walks while striking out only once in 23 at-bats, consistently putting pressure on Cleary pitching.
Austin handled the rest in the circle. The Madonna starter worked all five innings, allowing one hit and no runs with two walks and three strikeouts on 85 pitches. Cleary managed only one baserunner beyond first base and finished with just four runners left on base.
Dunkel led the Crusaders offensively with two hits and three RBIs, while Cramton added two hits and two RBIs. Rosiewicz tripled and scored, and Fitzpatrick doubled, drove in a run and scored twice as Madonna improved its day with another complete performance at home.
