Crusaders hand Warriors first loss of the season

LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University men's basketball team (5-2, 3-0 WHAC) scored a huge 86-82 victory over Rochester University (7-1, 2-1 WHAC) on Wednesday evening inside Alliance Catholic Credit Union Arena. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The visiting Warriors came out hot to start, jumping out to a 21-13 advantage at the first media break thanks to a bombard of three-point baskets. Madonna regrouped however, and took a 26-25 lead with 7:03 remaining in the opening period following a three-pointer by Matthew MacLellan. From there, the two sides could never really get a run going, and the Crusaders took a 39-38 lead into the halftime break. Brendan Young led the Crusaders in the opening half with 12 points, while Gunnar Walters and Brandon Michrina led the Warriors with 11 points each. 

The second half was just as close as the first half. Madonna outscored Rochester 47-44, and the outcome of the game wasn't decided until four seconds remaining. Following a three-point basket by Walters, Rochester fouled Ryan Nunn and sent the senior to the free throw line up 84-82. Nunn calmly knocked down both free throws to hand the Warriors their first loss of the season. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Young finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, and five assists to lead Madonna. 
  • MacLellan posted a career-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. 
  • Devin Dunn added 13 points, while Sho-Ron Graham posted 12. 
  • Michrina led Rochester with 22 points, while Walters recorded 21. 
  • Madonna as a team shot 32-of-59 from the field, while the Warriors were 30-of-62.

The Crusaders will ride their four-game winning streak into Saturday's matchup at UM-Dearborn. Tipoff is set for 3:00 PM.
