LIVONIA, Mich. – Senior right hander
Jeremy Gooding (Livonia, Mich. / Divine Child Catholic) threw a shutout as the Madonna University baseball team won its Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series over Indiana Tech with a 2-0 win on Saturday (April 6) in game one of the doubleheader. Indiana Tech won the series finale by a 12-2 final at the Madonna Athletic Complex, home of Ilitch Ballpark.
Six different Crusaders posted hits in the win with junior designated hitter
Ryan Lech(Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) and freshman first baseman
John Lauro(Rochester Hills, Mich. / University of Detroit Jesuit) each hitting a double for MU with junior shortstop
Victor Barron (Fowlerville, Mich. / Fowlerville) driving in both runs.
Gooding worked out of a jam in the top of the first after a leadoff single from Jacob Dunnichay. Dunnichay worked his way over to third but was stranded there as Gooding got a pair of fly outs to end the inning.
MU plated both of its runs in the third inning with two outs. Freshman second baseman
Shane Dokey (Howell, Mich. / Brighton) singled to left and moved to third on a single by senior right fielder
Brad Lineberry (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth). Tech tried to cut Dokey down at third but was unsuccessful, allowing Lineberry to reach second on the throw. Barron then singled to right, plating both runners for a 2-0 lead.
Gooding worked out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh keeping Indiana Tech off the board. Tech's first two batters reached on singles before Gooding got a strikeout and a ground out. An infield single loaded the bases for the Warriors but Gooding induced another ground out to end the threat and kept the shutout intact.
Gooding (4-0) allowed just one additional runner on a single in the eighth and sent Tech down in order in the ninth to earn the win. He struck out 10 batters while allowing just one walk and scattering six hits for his fourth win of the season.
Aaron Lewellyn (1-3) took the loss for Tech, striking out two while being charged with both runs. Dunnichay was the lone Warrior with two hits in the game.
The Tech offense awoke in game four of the series, scoring 12 times in a 12-2 win. The Warriors scored 11 runs in the first four innings before the Crusaders got on the board.
Lauro drove in senior left fielder
Steve Pelletier (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Harrison) with a single to left for the first MU run. The Crusaders' second run came home on a bases loaded walk to freshman centerfielder
Christian Holder (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Divine Child Catholic) that forced in Lauro and made it 11-2 after four innings.
Tech added an additional run in the fifth for the 12-2 final.
Senior righty
Peter Renaud (Holly, Mich. / Fenton) took the loss for MU, giving up four runs in an inning and two-thirds. Renaud (2-1) struck out one in the loss.
Ben Christian and Justin Kalusa each had three hits for Tech in support of starter Zach Sailors. Sailors (3-1) struck out two in earning his third win of the season.
MU returns to the road and will attempt to play its WHAC doubleheader at Aquinas for the third time on Wednesday (April 8).
