Jurczyk’s complete game, six-run surge lift Madonna past Texas Wesleyan 6-1 in Game one of the NAIA Opening Round

LINCOLN, Neb.-- Madonna pulled away with a three-run sixth inning and rode a complete-game effort from Jason Jurczyk Jr. to a 6-1 win over Texas Wesleyan on Monday at Sherman Field in Lincoln, Neb. in game one of the NAIA Opening Round. The Crusaders turned a tight two-run game into a comfortable lead in the middle innings, then let Jurczyk finish it off in the neutral-site matchup.

After three scoreless innings, Madonna broke through in the fourth when Brett Reed singled to left to score Kevin Davis for a 1-0 lead. The Crusaders added another run in the fifth on Donovan Thompson's sacrifice fly, which brought home Aamir Mitchell and made it 2-0. That set the stage for the decisive sixth, when Logan Ellis delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to score Gus Simon before Ty Stepek followed with a two-run double to left-center, stretching the margin to 5-0.

Madonna added one more run in the seventh on Davis' solo home run. Texas Wesleyan answered in the bottom half with a solo shot from Gabriel Supelveda, its only run of the day, but Jurczyk kept the damage limited and never allowed the game to tighten. He retired the side in the ninth to complete the win.

Jurczyk went all nine innings for Madonna, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking one on 112 pitches. The Crusaders backed him with a clean defensive game and steady offense, finishing with 12 hits, six RBIs, two doubles, one home run and three stolen bases. Madonna did not commit an error, while Texas Wesleyan finished with two.

Davis led the offense by going 3 for 5 with a home run, two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base. Stepek went 2 for 5 with the key two-run double, and Reed added two hits and an RBI. Madonna also got an important bench contribution from Ellis, whose pinch-hit single helped ignite the inning that put the game away.

The win gave Madonna a crisp, well-rounded performance on both sides of the ball. The Crusaders scored in four straight innings from the fourth through the seventh, and Jurczyk closed it out with the same control he showed all afternoon, ending the game with a scoreless ninth and a complete-game victory.

The Crusaders will face off against Doane University on Tuesday, May 12th at 4:00 PM CST.
