Madonna rally falls short in 10-9 loss to Doane at Sherman Field

LINCOLN, Neb. - Madonna's late push came up one run short Tuesday as Doane (NE) scored three times in the eighth inning and held on for a 10-9 win over the Crusaders in a neutral-site game at Sherman Field.

The decisive stretch came after a back-and-forth afternoon had settled into a 7-7 tie. Doane broke through in the top of the eighth on Carter Roth's RBI single, then Jett Grossart added a two-run single to put the Tigers in front 10-7. Madonna answered in the bottom half when Brett Reed produced an RBI groundout, and the Crusaders made one final push in the ninth on Kooper Etheridge's run-scoring single, but Doane closed it out before Madonna could complete the comeback.

Madonna seized the early momentum in the first inning. Luke Spicer tripled and scored on a wild pitch, and Aamir Mitchell followed with a home run to right to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead. Doane answered in the second, turning the game on Roth's three-run homer to left that erased the deficit and moved the Tigers ahead 4-2.

The Crusaders chipped away and then briefly moved back in front with the long ball. Etheridge led off the fourth with a solo homer to center, trimming the gap to 4-3. In the fifth, Madonna put together its biggest inning of the day, scoring four times, with Ty Stepek delivering the key swing, a three-run homer to left that gave the Crusaders a 7-6 advantage.

Doane tied the game again in the sixth on Tanner Nelson's RBI single, and the teams traded scoreless frames until the eighth-inning surge. Roth finished with a standout day for Doane, going 3-for-5 with three runs, four RBIs and a homer. Grossart drove in three runs, and Grant Sommers scored three times. Ethan Merk earned the win for Doane, allowing two runs over 4 2/3 innings of relief.

Madonna outhit Doane 11-9 and got key offensive production throughout the lineup. Stepek went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a homer, Etheridge had two hits with two RBIs, Mitchell scored three times while homering and drawing two walks, and Spicer scored twice after his first-inning triple. David Zilch took the loss for Madonna. The Crusaders also overcame multiple deficits before the eighth, but Doane's final rally proved to be the difference in front of an attendance of 200.
