LIVONIA, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The No. 11-ranked Madonna University baseball team tied the program record for wins in a season on Thursday (May 6) with a sweep of Rochester College. MU took game one 7-0 before completing the sweep with a 5-4 walk-off win in the night cap at Ilitch Ballpark to close the 2010 regular season.
MU's 43 wins this season ties the 1993 squad for the most wins in program history. The Crusaders have now posted 30 or more win in the last seven seasons and the 43 wins are the most since the 2005 team registered 40 victories.
The Crusaders opened game one with a trio of runs in the bottom of the first as senior
Ted Toune (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center/Lansing CC) led off with a single and came around to score on a double from
Spencer Sarel (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) that was misplayed in the corner in left for a 1-0 lead.
Jeff Bultinck(Sterling Heights, Mich./Notre Dame Prep/Concordia) then made it 3-0 with a two-run homer to right center that staked the Crusaders to a three-run cushion.
MU added another run in the fourth when Toune connected on his ninth home run of the season to make it 4-0.
The Crusaders put the game away with three more runs in the sixth as
Brad Lineberry (Canton, Mich./Plymouth), Bultinck and Toune all drove in runs for the 7-0 final.
Freshman
Jeremy Gooding (Livonia, Mich./Divine Child Catholic/Saginaw Valley) picked up his eighth win of the season, throwing three innings, allowing two hits while striking out four. MU starter
John Ballarin (Westland, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central/Eastern Michigan) posted almost identical numbers to Gooding, allowing three base hits in his three innings of work to go along with four strike outs.
In the night cap the Crusaders plated a single run in the first when Bultinck singled home Toune who led off the game by being hit by a pitch and gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
MU added two more runs in the second as Lineberry led off with a walk and after moving to second on a balk, came home on a single from
Tarik Khasawneh(Canton, Mich./Canton) to make it 2-0. A single from
Mike Gansser (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rochester Adams) two batters later scored courtesy runner
Steve Pelletier (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) for a 3-0 lead.
The Warriors made it a one-run game in the third, scoring a pair of runs as Aaron Distelrath and Steve Bedsole delivered RBIs to make it a 3-2 game.
Rochester took a 4-3 lead in the fifth, taking advantage of a Crusader miscue to score a pair of runs with two outs as Bedsole drove in both with a double down the left field line.
MU tied the game at four-all in the bottom of the inning as the Crusaders put up a run with two outs as well.
Matt Kay (Canton, Mich./Canton/Henry Ford CC) reached on a single and moved to second on a single from
Dan Harder (Brighton, Mich./Brighton/Heidelberg) to put runners at first and second for Lineberry. The freshman then came through with a single of his own to right to score Kay and make it 4-4.
Kyle Bolton (Burlington, Ont./Notre Dame/Indiana Tech) worked out of a lead off walk in the top of the seventh to give the Crusaders a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Zach Flavin (Novi, Mich./Novi) drew a lead off walk and Pelletier pinch ran for him. Pelletier then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before Harder singled him home for a 5-4 walk-off win.
Bolton (8-0) earned the win in relief as four Crusader pitchers combined to hold Rochester to seven hits. Bolton threw two and a third innings, giving up two hits and striking out a hitter.
