FORT WAYNE, Ind. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The No. 15-ranked Madonna University baseball team avenged a sweep at the hands of Indiana Tech three days ago with a sweep on Monday (April 5) at Warrior Field. MU won game one 4-3 and took the night cap by a final of 12-4.
MU (22-5; 2-2 WHAC) got a solid outing on the mound in game one from freshman
Jeremy Gooding (Livonia, Mich./Divine Child/Saginaw Valley State), as the rookie right hander ran his record to 4-0 with a complete game effort. Gooding scattered five hits and allowed just two earned runs while striking out five.
Senior
John Ballarin (Westland, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central/Eastern Michigan) earned the win in the night cap, throwing three and a third innings, striking out two and allowing just one base runner to improve to 2-1 on the year.
Junior
Shawn Little (Canton, Mich./Canton) went 4-for-6 on the day with a RBI and a run scored in the night cap. Senior
Zach Flavin (Novi, Mich./Novi) drove in three runs in game two while classmate
Ted Toune (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center/Lansing CC) hit a homer as part of a 16 hit Crusader attach.
Tech got on the board first in game one with a solo homer from Paul McIntosh in the second to stake itself to a 1-0 lead.
MU took the lead in the top of the fifth, scoring three times to go up 3-1. Freshman
Brad Lineberry (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) and junior
Mike Gansser (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rochester Adams) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Freshman
Donny Holland (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) reached safely on a fielder's choice that could not cut Lineberry down at home and made it a 1-1 game. After a sac bunt from freshman
Steve Pelletier (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) moved both runners up, a Tech throwing error on a ball off the bat of sophomore
Billy Hardin III (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central/Ashland) scored Gansser and made it 2-1. Junior
Jeff Bultinck (Sterling Heights, Mich./Notre Dame Prep/Concordia) then delivered a sacrifice fly to score courtesy runner
Alex Charles(Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) to make it 3-1 Madonna.
Tech tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of a Crusader miscue and a pair of base hits to square the game at 3-3.
The Crusaders scored the game winning run in the top of the seventh when senior
Drew Fry (Madison Heights, Mich./Madison Heights) scored Gansser on a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-3 game.
Gooding came out in the seventh and after hitting the lead off batter proceeded to get Gary King to fly out to junior
Matt Kay (Canton, Mich./Canton/Henry Ford CC) in right before getting Brendan Sontag to go down on strikes and Justin Medeiros to ground out to Bultinck at second to end the game and give the Crusaders their first WHAC win of the season.
MU scored first in game two, plating a single run in the top of the first when Little doubled home Toune - who led off the game with a walk - to make it 1-0.
The Warriors struck back in the night cap, getting three runs off of Crusader senior starter
Kyle Bolton (Burlington, Ont./Notre Dame/Indiana Tech) in the bottom of the frame after a pair of walks allowed Taylor Hoisington to hit a three-run homer to right center to put IIT on top 3-0.
The Crusaders cut into their deficit in the third when Bultinck scored after a failed pick off attempt sailed into center field and allowed the Crusader second baseman to score from second and make it 3-2.
MU tied the game in the fourth when junior
Dan Harder (Brighton, Mich./Brighton/Heidelberg) singled home Lineberry to make it three-all.
Tech answered back in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead at 4-3 but MU answered back with a pair of runs in the fifth to go on top for good at 5-4. Flavin doubled home Toune and Bultinck to put MU up by a run.
Madonna blew the game open in the sixth, scoring six runs to take a commanding 11-4 lead. Bultinck, Flavin, Kay and Lineberry all had RBIs as part of a six-run, six hit out burst.
Toune capped the scoring in the seventh with his fourth homer of the season to make it 12-4.
Ballarin retired Tech in order in the seventh for the MU sweep.
Madonna returns to the field on Saturday in a WHAC double header at Davenport. First pitch at East entwood High School is set for 1pm.
