ADRIAN, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The No. 13-ranked Madonna University baseball team captured its fifth Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship in the last six seasons with a double header sweep at Siena Heights University on Thursday (April 29). The Crusaders won game one 7-2 before taking the night cap 6-1 at the SHU Baseball Field.
The Crusaders captured their ninth overall crown (regular season and tournament) under head coach
Greg Haeger and will host the 2010 WHAC Baseball Championship slated for May 10-13 at Ilitch Ballpark as the No. 1 seed.
Sophomore right hander
Robert Fraser (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) threw a complete game in the opener, striking out seven while scattering seven hits and allowing just one earned run in moving to 5-1 on the year.
Senior lefty
John Ballarin (Westland, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central/Eastern Michigan) picked up the win in game two - his sixth of the season against just one loss - throwing six and a third innings, allowing just one run while striking out eight before giving way to sophomore
Andy Omilian (Plymouth, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) for the final two outs of the ball game.
Seniors
Zach Flavin (Novi, Mich./Novi) and
Ted Toune (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center/Lansing CC) along with junior
Matt Kay (Canton, Mich./Canton/Henry Ford CC) and sophomore
Dan Harder (Brighton, Mich./Brighton/Heidelberg) all hit home runs as Toune led off both games with a long ball and Flavin's was part of a five-hit, three RBI day for the Crusader first baseman. Harder and Toune also both drove in three runs on the afternoon.
MU jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the day's opener thanks to Toune's seventh homer of the season to open the game.
A pair of Crusader miscues allowed the Saints to tie the game at one in the bottom of the frame when Cory Lehman reached on an error and came home when a ball Justin Root hit was misplayed on the MU infield, squaring the game at 1-1.
It remained a 1-1 game until the fourth when the Royal Blue and Gold scored twice to retake the lead at 3-1. Kay clubbed his sixth home run of the season with Flavin aboard to stake the Crusaders to a two-run lead.
MU tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth as junior
Mike Gansser (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rochester Adams) led off with a single and after moving up on a sacrifice bunt, came home on a Toune single through the right side for a 4-1 lead. After stealing second, Toune came into score two batters later on a triple off of the bat of junior
Jeff Bultinck (Sterling Heights, Mich./Notre Dame Prep/Concordia) to make it 5-1. Bultinck then scored to put the Crusaders on top by five on Flavin's single to make it 6-1.
Harder connected on his fourth long ball of the season to add an insurance run in the sixth, pushing the lead to 7-1.
The Saints scratched a run across in the bottom of the frame using a single from Spike Holliday followed by a double from Josh White to cut the Crusader lead to 7-2, but Fraser sent the next three hitters down in order to work out of the jam and keep the Crusaders on top by five.
After allowing a lead off single in the seventh Fraser got back-to-back ground outs and a pop out to end the game and pick up his fifth win of the season.
Game two of the day opened much like the first as Toune hit a lead off homer to right to put MU on top 1-0 after half an inning.
The Crusaders added another run in the fourth as Flavin led off with a solo shot to left for a 2-0 lead.
The Saints made it a one-run ball game in the bottom of the fourth as Root led off with a single and after moving to third on a double, a balk was called on Ballarin to score the runner from third for a 2-1 game.
Madonna put the game away in the sixth, scoring four times to claim a 6-1 lead. Sophomore
Billy Hardin III (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central/Ashland) led off with a walk and sophomore pinch runner
Alex Charles (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) moved to second on a Bultinck single up the middle. Flavin then singled to score Charles for a 3-1 lead. After a ground ball moved both runners up, Harder delivered a double to left center that cleared the bases to make it a 5-1 game. Harder came home two batters later when Gansser singled to left for the 6-1 lead.
Ballarin sent the Saints down in order in the sixth and after striking out the lead off man in the seventh was lifted for Omilian. The side-arming righty retired the first batter he faced on a ground out and after a MU miscue allowed a runner to reach base, Omilian got Jose Paez to ground to Hardin III at third to end the game and give the Crusaders the WHAC title.
MU wraps up the league slate on Saturday (May 1), hosting Siena Heights in a Senior Day double header slated for 1pm at Ilitch Ballpark.
