Jeff Bultinck (Sterling Heights, Mich./Notre Dame Prep/Concordia) at the plate propelled the No. 15-ranked Madonna University baseball team to a sweep of visiting Rochester College on Monday (April 19) afternoon at Ilitch Ballpark. MU took game one 7-1 before winning the night cap 6-0.
Senior
Kyle Bolton (Burlington, Ont./Notre Dame/Indiana Tech) threw a complete game in the day's opener, scattering six hits while allowing just one walk and striking out nine. Junior
Sam Haldane (St. Thomas, Ont./Central Elgin/Lake Land CC) went six innings in the night cap, scattering six hits before giving way to sophomore
Andy Omilian (Plymouth, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) who threw a perfect seventh to seal up the win.
Bultinck drove in three runs on the day to go along with his five hits and hit his third triple of the season in the opener. Junior
Tarik Khasawneh (Canton, Mich./Canton) was 2-for-2 with three RBIs in game one while classmate
Shawn Little (Canton, Mich./Canton) picked up a pair of hits and a RBI in game two.
The Crusaders opened the day with six runs in the bottom of the first inning, seeing senior
Ted Toune (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center/Lansing CC) lead off with a single and moved to second on a single from freshman
Spencer Sarel (Brighton, Mich./Brighton). Both runners came home on Bultinck's triple to right for a 2-0 MU lead. Senior
Zach Flavin (Novi, Mich./Novi) reached on a Warrior error that let Bultinck score for a 3-0 edge. Junior
Matt Kay (Canton, Mich./Canton/Henry Ford CC) then singled and after a pair of fly outs, junior
Mike Gansser (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rochester Adams) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Khasawneh. The Crusader catcher singled to center to clear the bases and put the home side on top 6-0 after just one inning.
MU added another run in the fourth when freshman
Steve Pelletier (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) hit into a fielder's choice that scored Gansser for a 7-0 lead.
The 7-0 lead was more than enough for Bolton (5-0) as the right hander kept the Warriors off the board until the sixth when Bobby Crossley doubled home Aaron Distelrath to cut the Crusader lead to 7-1 but Bolton got a pair of ground outs to end the inning and threw a 1-2-3 seventh for the win.
The Crusaders plated single runs in the second, third and fourth innings of the night cap to take a 3-0 lead after four innings. Freshman
Brad Lineberry (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) scored MU's first run, hitting a lead off single in the second and after moving to second on a balk and to third on a ground ball, came home when Justin Green uncorked a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
The MU lead grew to 2-0 in the third when Kay singled home Bultinck and the Crusaders tacked on run three in the fourth when Pelletier scored won a Warrior error for a 3-0 lead.
Madonna blew the game open in the sixth, scoring three times to take a 6-0 lead. Lineberry and Pelletier opened the inning with back-to-back walks and the bases became loaded when
Donny Holland (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) was hit by a pitch. Little followed with a single to score Lineberry and make it 4-0.
Billy Hardin III (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central/Ashland) then delivered a sac fly to score pinch runner
Alex Charles (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) for a 5-0 lead. Bultinck singled home Little for the final MU run.
Omilian then came in from the bullpen and got the Warriors to all fly out to complete the sweep.
The Crusaders now turn their attention to final exams before swinging back into league play on Saturday (April 24) when the host Aquinas College in a 1pm double header at Ilitch Ballpark.
