ANN ARBOR, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - The No. 15-rannked Madonna University baseball team opened its weekend series against Concordia University with a pair of wins on Friday as the Crusaders took the opener 7-3 and completed the sweep with a 10-6 come-from-behind win in the night cap.

Jeremy Gooding (Livonia, Mich./Divine Child/Saginaw Valley State) worked a complete game in the opener, striking out seven to move to 6-0 on the year. John Ballarin (Westland, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central/Eastern Michigan) also threw a complete game to move to 4-1 on the year, allowing just two earned runs in game two.

Jeff Bultinck (Sterling Heights, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) and Brad Lineberry (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) each had five hits on the day while Matt Kay (Canton, Mich./Canton/Henry Ford CC) hit a three-run home run that proved to be the difference in game one while after going 0-for-4 in the opener, Shawn Little (Canton, Mich./Canton) posted three hits in the night cap.

MU scored first in the opener as Ted Toune (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center/Lansing CC) led off with a single and moved to third on a double from Bultinck. Zach Flavin (Novi, Mich./Novi) grounded out to bring Toune home for a 1-0 lead.

CU tied the game in the fourth, putting three straight hits together off of Gooding to make it 1-1.

The Crusaders took the lead back for good in the top of the fifth when Lineberry led off with a single and after stealing second and moving to third when the throw to second went high, came home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

MU blew the game open in the sixth, scoring four times with Kay delivering the big blow - a three run homer to dead center - to push the MU cushion to 6-1.

The Cards got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a Crusader miscue to make it 6-3 but the Crusaders answered back with a run in the seventh when Kay singled home Bultinck to for a 7-3 lead.

Gooding sent the side down in order in the last of the seventh for his sixth win of the year.

Game two did not start the way the Crusaders had hoped as the Cardinals plated four runs off of Ballarin to jump on top 4-0. CU saw four of its first five hitters reach base and took advantage of a Madonna error to post its four runs.

MU started to trim down its deficit in the second, scoring a run to make it 4-1 when Lineberry doubled home Little.

Steve Pelletier (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) scored on a Bultinck ground ball in the third to make it 4-2 before the Crusaders exploded for eight runs in the fifth to take a commanding 10-4 lead.

Spencer Sarel (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) and Bultinck started the inning off with singles and Flavin reached on an error that scored Sarel to make it 4-3. Kay followed with a single to load the bases and Little then unloaded them with a single to plate two and put the Crusaders on top 5-4. Lineberry followed with a single to reload the bases before a sac fly from Billy Hardin III (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central/Ashland) scored Kay to for a 6-4 lead.

Donny Holland (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) and Toune walked to force in another run and make it 7-4. Sarel reached on a fielder's choice that scored Lineberry for an 8-4 lead. It became a 9-4 game when Bultinck singled and grew to 10-4 when Flavin reached on another fielder's choice that scored Toune to cap the scoring.

Ballarin allowed two runs in the bottom of the fifth but settled back in, letting just two more runners reach base the rest of the game to pick up his fourth win of the campaign.

The Crusaders and Cardinals close out the weekend set on Saturday with a 1pm double header at Ilitch Ballpark.
