POST GAME INTERVIEW ON CRUSADERVISION
LIVONIA, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - -A 7-for-8 day at the plate from junior
Jeff Bultinck (Sterling Heights, Mich./Notre Dame Prep/Concordia) helped propel the No. 15-ranked Madonna University baseball team to a sweep over visiting Rochester College by finals of 12-4 and 9-6 on Wednesday (March 31) at Ilitch Ballpark.
The wins move MU to 20-3 on the year heading into conference play this weekend.
GAME ONE
In the day's opener the Madonna bats plated 12 runs on 14 hits for the 12-4 win. The Crusaders got on the board early as Bultinck connected on his second homer of the season - a two-run shot to right center - in the bottom of the first to score
Ted Toune (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center/Lansing CC) and put MU on top 2-0.
Rochester plated single runs off of MU starter
Sam Haldane (St. Thomas, Ont./Elgin Central/Lake Land CC) in both the second and third innings to knot the game at 2-2.
The Crusaders untied the game in the bottom of the third with four runs to retake the lead at 6-2. Toune singled and then stole second before coming home on a single from
Spencer Sarel (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) to put MU back on top 3-2. Sarel came home two hitters later when
Zach Flavin (Novi, Mich./Novi) doubled to make it 4-2. A ground out by
Matt Kay (Canton, Mich./Canton/Henry Ford CC) scored Bultinck and a double from
Dan Harder (Brighton, Mich./Brighton/Heidelberg) scored Flavin for the 6-2 MU lead.
Rochester cut the Madonna lead down to 6-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth but MU responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame to take the commanding 12-4 lead. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Kay who clubbed his team leading third homer of the season - a three run shot to right center - that completed the scoring for the Royal Blue and Gold.
Andy Omilian (Plymouth, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) came in and threw a perfect seventh inning, closing the game with a strike out for the 12-4 win.
Haldane (3-1) went six innings, scattering eight hits and striking out four for his third win of the year. Bultinck and Sarel each had three hits while Kay drove in four runs.
GAME TWO
The Warriors scored first in the night cap, plating three runs off of starter
Kyle Bolton (Burlington, Ont./Notre Dame/Indiana Tech) in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead before the Crusaders had even gotten to the plate.
MU answered back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs starting with a RBI single from Sarel that scored Toune followed by a double from Bultinck that scored Sarel to make it 3-2.
The Crusaders tied the game at three-all in the bottom of the third when
Brad Lineberry (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) tripled home Bultinck to square the game at 3-3.
The Crusaders took their first lead of the game in the fourth, plating a pair of runs on a Sarel single that scored both
Mike Gansser (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Rochester Adams) and
Steve Pelletier (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) to put the home side up 5-3.
MU tacked on a single run in the fifth when a Kay sacrifice fly scored Bultinck - who had led off with a triple - to make it 6-3.
RC tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth but MU once again answered back with three runs of its own thanks to RBI hits from Toune, Sarel and Bultinck to make it 9-6.
John Ballarin (Westland, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central/Eastern Michigan) came in for the seventh and after allowing two base runners, got Bobby Stout to foul out to Flavin at first for the final out.
Bolton (3-0) worked six innings, allowing just three earned runs and striking out eight to pick up his third win of the season. Bultinck went 4-for-4 with two RBIs while Sarel was 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the MU hit parade.
MU continues its home stand and opens WHAC play on Saturday against Indiana Tech in a 1pm double header at Ilitch Ballpark.
