ALBION, Mich. (MadonnaCrusaders.com) - - After an eight-day layoff, the No. 21-ranked Madonna University baseball team returned to action on Friday (March 19) and swept both ends of a double header at Albion College by finals of 14-7 and 8-4 at Frank Jorank Field.
GAME ONE
The Crusaders (15-3) got on the board first, plating a single run in the top of the first when junior
Jeff Bultinck (Sterling Heights, Mich.) reached on a fielder's choice and moved up to third on a wild pitch before coming home on a Briton throwing error for a 1-0 MU lead.
MU broke the game open in the second with senior
Ted Toune (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) driving in a pair of runs in the frame to make it a 6-0 MU lead.
Albion got two runs back in the bottom of the second to trim the Madonna lead to just four at 6-2 but MU put up three runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to go on top 14-2 after four and a half innings. Senior
Zach Flavin (Novi, Mich.) had the big blow in the fifth, clubbing a three run homer to left.
The Britons got to the Crusader bull pen in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of five walks issued by the Madonna staff before junior
Chris Skalski(West Bloomfield, Mich.) came in and closed the door, getting the final two hitters to fly out to center and preserve the 14-7 win.
Junior
Sam Haldane (St. Thomas, Ont.) went six innings, scattering four hits and striking out seven to improve to 2-1 on the year. Five different Crusaders posted two hits in the game with Flavin driving in three as part of a 16-hit performance at the plate.
GAME TWO
MU (16-3) scored in the opening inning again in the night cap to go on top 2-0 after just half an inning. Flavin delivered a sacrifice fly to score
Billy Hardin III(Livonia, Mich.) before
Matt Kay (Canton, Mich.) singled and scored Bultinck to stake the Crusaders to a 2-0 lead.
The Crusaders added another run in the third as Toune led off with a double and came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. The Britons got a run back in their half of the third to pull back with in two at 3-1.
A two-run triple from Toune in the fourth was the big blow in a four-run Crusader inning that blew the game open and made it 7-1.
MU added its eighth run in the seventh when
Steve Pelletier (Farmington Hills, Mich.) scored on a passed ball that made it 8-1 Madonna.
Albion plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh but junior
Trent Pohl (Grand Ledge, Mich.) got the final Briton to pop out to short and complete the Crusader sweep by a final of 8-4.
Sophomore
Robert Fraser (Westland, Mich.) earned the win, moving to 3-0 with five and two-thirds innings of work. Fraser struck out six while allowing just a run. Toune was the lone Crusader to post multiple hits to go along with two RBIs. Flavin drove in three, moving his total on the day to six.
MU returns to the field on Tuesday (March 23) at Ohio Dominican in a 1pm double header.
