BASEBALL SWEEPS WILLIAM PENN ON SATURDAY

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - - Behind a three-hitter in game one from Jeff Sonnenberg (Holt, Mich.) and two Kevin Zerbo (Farmington, Mich.) home runs in game two, the Madonna University baseball team swept William Penn on Saturday by finals of 2-0 and 8-7.

In the opener, neither team could crack the run column until MU put up the game's only two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Shawn Little (Canton, Mich.) reached on a two-out walk and came home on Matt Kay's (Canton, Mich.) second homer of the season to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.

After allowing two base runners in the third, Sonnenberg was perfect to run his record to 2-0. Aaron Hacias (Sterling Heights, Mich.), Tarik Khasawneh (Canton, Mich.), Kay and Little posted hits for MU in the win.

The night cap was a slug-fest with the two teams combining for 15 runs. Both sides plated a run in the first but MU took the lead in the fourth going in front 2-1 on a Zerbo homer.

The lead ballooned to 6-1 in the fifth after Little reached on a one-out double to right center and was brought home on Ryan Morrow's (Taylor, Mich.) single to make it 3-1. After Mike Gansser (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) reached on a fielder's choice that erased Morrow, Hacias drew a walk and set the stage for Zerbo's second long ball in as many at-bats to put MU in front by five at 6-1.

The bottom of the inning was just as offensive as WPU scored six runs of its own to pull in front 7-6.

The Crusaders struck last, plating two runs in the top of the seventh to seal up the win.

Hacias doubled and was followed by walks to Zerbo and Zach Flavin (Novi, Mich.) to load the bases. Drew Fry (Madison Heights, Mich.) then drew another walk to force in Hacias to tie the game at 7-7. Ted Toune (DeWitt, Mich.) then drew the fourth walk of the inning issued to MU to force in Zerbo with the game winning run and an 8-7 Madonna victory.

Jeff Mann (Waterford, Mich.) picked up his first win of the season in relief, throwing two perfect innings, striking out one. Little, Morrow and Zerbo each posted two hits with Zerbo collecting four RBIs.

The Crusaders wrap up their stay at the Russ Matt Challenge on Sunday with a double header against Mount Marty starting at 2:30pm.
