FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Madonna University's baseball team (17-16, 7-5 WHAC) came up short in a back-and-forth contest with the University of Saint Francis (16-16, 13-7 Crossroads) on Tuesday, falling 15-14 at Cougar Field. Both teams displayed impressive offensive performances, with a combined 29 hits in the game, but it was Saint Francis who managed to outlast the Crusaders in the final innings.
The game began with both teams exchanging runs in the first inning. Madonna struck first, taking a 1-0 lead after an error by the Saint Francis third baseman allowed Ty Stepek to score. Saint Francis quickly answered in the bottom of the first after crossing the plate on a groundout.
The Crusaders surged ahead in the second inning with a four-run outburst. Johnny Stepek's RBI single and T. Stepek's three-run homer to left field gave Madonna a 5-1 lead. However, Saint Francis responded with a massive five run inning in the second and an even bigger seven-run third inning to take a commanding 13-5 lead.
The Crusaders would find a way to dig themselves out of a hole with a three run fourth inning and a six run fifth inning which would give the Crusaders a 14-13 lead heading into the final stretch. Despite the Crusaders efforts, Saint Francis answered back with runs in the sixth and ninth to secure the win. The Crusaders' offensive production was led by T. Stepek, who finished with six RBIs, including two homers. However, the pitching staff could not contain the Saint Francis offense, with the Saints' 18-hit barrage proving too much.
