WOMEN'S BASKETBALL DOWNS ROCHESTER 80-44

LIVONIA, Mich. - - The Madonna women's basketball team notched its first win of the season on Saturday (Nov. 8) with an 80-44 win over visiting Rochester College. The win improves Madonna to 1-4 on the season while Rochester falls to 1-3.

The game was tight early on and saw four ties, the last coming with 14:48 left with the scoreboard showing 9-9. MU then went on an 11-0 run to take a 20-9 lead with 9:47 left in the first half. The Crusaders pushed the lead to as many as 16 on a three from Elizabeth Buttery (South Lyon, Mich.) to make it 33-17 Madonna with 5:34 left.

Rochester cut the lead back down to single digits at seven (37-30) with 1:08 left before two Vanessa LaMay (Taylor, Mich.) free throws gave the Crusaders a 39-30 lead going into halftime.

Coming out of the intermission the Crusaders pushed the lead to 25 by going on a 16-0 run over the first eight minutes of the half to have a 59-34 lead with 11:01 left on the clock. Madonna built its lead out to as many as 36 by shooting 44 percent from the floor for the game and holding the Warriors to just 29 percent from the floor. The Warriors did not shoot a free throw in the second half while the Crusaders knocked down nine of the 15 charity tosses they took.

Alyssa Guerin (Plymouth, Mich.) led Madonna with 14 points while Christie Carrico (Waterford, Mich.) had 13, Tabatha Wydryck (Wyandotte, Mich.) added 12 and Kim Olech (Canton, Mich.) had 11 to go along with seven rebounds. LaMay led MU with 10 rebounds. Jessica Crook led the Warriors with 19 points.

Madonna is off until next Saturday when it plays host to Calvin College at 7pm inside the Activities Center. The game will be carried live on madonncrusaders.com starting at 6:55pm.
