Comeback falls short as Madonna falls 67-44 to Rochester Christian

LIVONIA, Mich. — Madonna University fell behind early and never recovered in a 67-44 loss to Rochester Christian (Mich.) on Saturday afternoon on senior day, undone by cold shooting from the field and consistent pressure on both ends of the floor.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Rochester Christian opened the game with a 16-6 first-quarter advantage and methodically extended its lead in each of the next three quarters, outscoring Madonna 21-10 in the second, 13-14 in the third and 17-14 in the fourth. The Crusaders trailed 37-16 at halftime and faced a 53-30 deficit entering the final 10 minutes, where late scoring and a more settled offensive rhythm helped close the gap but could not threaten the final outcome.

Offensively, Madonna struggled to find a consistent touch, finishing 15-for-59 (25.4%) from the floor and just 2-of-16 (12.5%) from beyond the arc. The Crusaders did generate trips to the free-throw line but went 12-for-24 (50.0%) at the stripe, limiting chances to chip away at Rochester Christian's double-digit cushion. Despite the shooting woes, Madonna battled on the glass, collecting 34 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end, to stay competitive on the boards against Rochester Christian's 42 total rebounds.

Rochester Christian's defense set the tone from the opening quarter, turning pressure into points. Madonna committed 16 turnovers against an active backcourt that produced 12 steals for the visitors, disrupting passing lanes and creating transition opportunities. The Crusaders generated seven steals of their own and recorded two blocks, but Rochester Christian's ability to convert mistakes into offense proved to be a key difference throughout the afternoon.

Madonna's best stretch came after halftime, when the Crusaders put together their most productive period with 14 points in the third quarter and matched that output again in the fourth. The team showed improved ball movement in the half court and greater composure against pressure, working for cleaner looks and earning additional chances on the offensive glass. Even as the deficit remained sizable, the Crusaders continued to compete defensively, forcing tougher shots and slowing Rochester Christian's pace compared to the first half.

Rochester Christian was led by Samone Andrews, who scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including three 3-pointers, while adding three rebounds, three assists and two steals in 28 minutes. Ashley Loon added 10 points and four rebounds, hitting two 3-pointers, and Tambre Williams controlled the interior with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds on 3-of-6 shooting. Jacey Somers helped drive the tempo with nine points, five assists, five rebounds and four steals in 28 minutes, directing an offense that finished 26-for-64 (40.6%) from the field, 8-of-26 (30.8%) from three and 7-of-10 at the line.

UP NEXT:
Rochester Christian maintained control into the closing minutes, with a late 3-pointer from Andrews and a layup by Jordan Peterson in the final 30 seconds setting the final margin at 67-44. The Crusaders will return for the 2026-2027 season.
