WOMEN'S HOOPS DROPS 64-49 DECISION TO CALVIN

LIVONIA, Mich. - - Cold shooting doomed the Madonna women's basketball team on Saturday (Nov. 15) night in a 64-49 loss to Calvin inside the Activities Center. The loss drops MU to 1-5 on the young season while Calvin opens its season at 1-0.

After opening the game with a 5-2 lead on a Christie Carrico (Waterford, Mich.) jumper, the Crusaders saw Calvin take the lead for good on a Marcia Harris jumper. The Knights offense built out a double-digit cushion at 19-8 on a Brook VanEck score. The Crusaders cut the lead back to single digits on a Carrico lay-in but Knights extended their lead back to as many as 16 with 4:14 left in the half before taking a 36-21 lead into the intermission.

Calvin shot 59 percent from the floor compared to just 27 for Madonna in the first half. The Knights were whistled for 12 turnovers while the Crusaders were charged with 10 in the opening 20 minutes.

The Knights continued their hot shooting in the second half, connecting at a 38 percent rate to build as much as a 22-point lead on three separate occasions. The closest MU got was 11 on a Tabatha Wydryck (Wyandotte, Mich.) jumper with 14:21 left.

Carrico led Madonna with 15 points, 11 coming in the first half. Wydryck grabbed seven rebounds to tie for game high honors on the boards. VanEck led all players with 20 points.

The Crusaders travel to NCAA Division II foe Northwood on Tuesday night for a 7pm tip before hosting the WHAC/MCC Challenge next weekend.
