WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO LINDSEY WILSON IN SEASON OPENER

UPLAND, Ind. - - Despite four players in double-figures, the Madonna women's basketball team opened the 2008-09 season on Friday night on the wrong end of a 70-59 decision at the hands of Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) at the Taylor Tip-Off Classic on the campus of Taylor University.

The Crusaders led through out most of the opening 10 minutes using nine points from newcomer Kim Olech (Canton, Mich.) to hold a 16-10 lead with 12:32 left in the opening half. The Blue Knights battled back into the game with consistent scoring and ultimetly took the lead at 19-18 with just over nine minutes left in the half.

Madonna retook the lead, leading by as many as six with just under three minutes to go, but a Lindsey Wilson score with just five ticks left sent the two teams to halftime with MU up 36-34.

MU shot 44 percent from the floor, knocking down 15 shots from the floor and five of its seven free throws. LWC on the other side connected at a 48 percent clip and missed all four of its free throws.

The Blue Knights used a 14-5 run over the opening seven and a half minutes of the second half to take a 10 point lead on a Sierra Rambert lay-up with 12:43 to go. The lead climbed to as many as 18 down the stretch as Lindsey Wilson pulled away, outscoring MU 36-23 over the final 20 minutes of the game for the 11 point win.

Olech led Madonna with 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her first double-double as a Crusader. Alyssa Guerin (Plymouth, Mich.) added 12 tallies while Christie Carrico (Waterford, Mich.) and Katie Mount (Waterford, Mich.) added 10 points each. Rambert led all scorers with 21 points in the win for LWC.

The Crusaders will take the floor in search of their first win of the season on Saturday against the tournament host, the No. 16 Trojans of Taylor at 2:00 pm.
