Crusaders Split with Racers

LIMA, OH - Madonna put the game away early Saturday, scoring three runs in the first inning and five more in the second on the way to a 9-0 softball victory over Northwestern Ohio at Racer Softball Field.

GAME 1:
Cramton finished with four RBIs, two runs and a double to lead the Crusaders' lineup. Rosiewicz scored twice and collected two hits, including a double, while Fitzpatrick drove in two runs. As a team, Madonna totaled eight hits, seven walks and eight RBIs in 23 at-bats.

In the circle, Camille Oyer threw a complete-game shutout over five innings. She allowed just two hits, did not issue a walk and struck out two as Madonna held Northwestern Ohio off the board throughout the run-rule win. The Racers managed only singles from Tayler Braun and Olive Staal and left four runners on base.
Madonna also kept the pressure on defensively, limiting Northwestern Ohio to 17 at-bats and recording 15 putouts. The Crusaders improved the day with a crisp all-around performance in front of 207 fans, with Oyer closing it out after just 63 pitches and the early offense proving more than enough.

The decisive stretch came immediately. Faith Cramton delivered a two-run double to center in the first, bringing home Ashley Rosiewicz and Regan Finkbeiner for a 2-0 lead. Payden Whitmore followed later in the inning with an RBI single to right that scored Cramton and capped a three-run opening frame. Madonna added even more separation in the second, sending across five runs to build an 8-0 advantage.
Rylee Fitzpatrick supplied one of the biggest hits of that second inning, lining a two-run single through the left side to score Brynn Anteau and Finkbeiner. Whitmore later drew a bases-loaded walk for another RBI, and an additional run came home on a passed ball. Madonna pushed the margin to 9-0 in the third when Cramton reached on a fielder's choice and Rosiewicz scored.

GAME 2:
Madonna pushed the tying run into scoring position late, but Northwestern Ohio held on for a 3-2 softball win Saturday afternoon. The decisive stretch came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Tayler Braun lined an RBI single through the left side and later stole home, helping Northwestern Ohio turn a 1-1 game into a two-run lead.
Northwestern Ohio struck first in the opening inning. Brenna Cobb doubled and later came home on Cecilia Campbell's sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 edge. Madonna answered in the top of the fifth, tying the game when Brynn Anteau lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored Regan Finkbeiner. The run was unearned, but it gave the Crusaders the opening they had been chasing through the first four innings.
The game shifted quickly in the bottom half of the fifth. Braun's RBI single brought home Mackenzie Brandt, and Braun later scored an unearned run on a steal of home to put Northwestern Ohio ahead 3-1. Madonna trimmed the margin in the sixth when Faith Peschke singled up the middle to drive in Payden Whitmore, cutting the deficit to one and setting up a tense final inning.
Whitmore and Anteau led Madonna offensively with two hits apiece. Whitmore also scored a run and drew a walk, while Anteau finished with an RBI and the sacrifice fly that tied the game. The Crusaders totaled six hits, drew two walks and left nine runners on base. Madonna also benefited from three Northwestern Ohio errors, with both Crusader runs scoring unearned.
In the circle, Northwestern Ohio's Karsyn McGlothen went the distance and earned the win after allowing six hits and two runs, both unearned, over seven innings. She struck out three and walked two across 108 pitches. Northwestern Ohio finished with seven hits, including two from Cobb, whose first-inning double helped create the game's first run.
Madonna's one-error afternoon kept the game within reach, but the fifth-inning swing proved too much to overcome. The Crusaders stayed within a run after Peschke's RBI single in the sixth, but Northwestern Ohio closed out the seventh to end Madonna's rally bid.
