Hart’s seven goals power Madonna past Aquinas 17-4

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich - Madonna broke open a close game with a dominant second half and rolled past Aquinas 17-4 on Saturday afternoon. After Aquinas pulled even early in the second quarter, the Crusaders responded with the game's next decisive stretch and finished with eight fourth-quarter goals, capping the day with Rico Hart's short-handed goal at the 1:02 mark.
Hart led Madonna with seven goals on 14 shots, including the late man-down finish that pushed the final margin to 13. Spencer Guppy added three goals and an assist, while Jackson Gradstein contributed a goal and three assists. Cooper Regimbal scored twice, Ryan Davis had a goal and two assists, and Ross Preston chipped in a goal and two assists as Madonna spread production throughout the lineup.
The Crusaders struck first when Guppy scored off a Davis assist at 13:49 of the first quarter, but Aquinas answered quickly. Ian Wright tied the game, and Oliver Modderman put the Saints in front 2-1 with a man-up goal at 9:13. Madonna regained control before the quarter break. Hart tied it at 2-2 off an assist from Guppy, then Davis scored with eight seconds left in the quarter, finishing a feed from Marcus Dochenetz for a 3-2 lead.
Aquinas drew level one more time when Braeden Williams scored at 14:03 of the second quarter, making it 3-3. That was as close as the Saints would get. Hart put Madonna back in front at 5:33 on an assist from Preston, and the Crusaders took over after halftime. Reid Dunavant scored twice in the opening 45 seconds of the third quarter, both times off assists from Gradstein, and Hart followed with another goal to extend the lead to 7-3. Regimbal added a goal later in the quarter, and Guppy scored with 35 seconds remaining to send Madonna into the fourth with a 9-4 advantage.
The fourth quarter turned into a runaway. Hart scored 59 seconds in, Gradstein followed 32 seconds later, and Regimbal converted off a Preston assist to make it 12-4 less than two minutes into the quarter. Hart added two more goals in the period, Preston scored off a Davis assist, and Guppy extended the lead to 16-4 before Hart's short-handed goal closed the scoring.
Madonna controlled the game in the possession battle as well, winning faceoffs 18-5 and finishing with a 31-20 edge in ground balls. Jonathan Bendfeldt anchored the defense with 18 saves in 60 minutes, repeatedly turning away Aquinas chances as the Crusaders pulled away. Aquinas goalie Austin Hynote made nine saves. Madonna finished with 46 shots, 26 on goal, and held the Saints scoreless in the fourth quarter.
