Madonna Falls 74-60 at Northwestern Ohio Despite Moore’s Double-Double

LIMA, Ohio — A hot start from beyond the arc and a decisive first-quarter surge proved too much for Madonna University to overcome in a 74-60 loss to Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday evening at The Garage.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Northwestern Ohio used an early 3-point barrage to seize control, outscoring the Crusaders 21-10 in the first quarter and never relinquishing a double-digit advantage the rest of the way. The Racers finished 11-for-30 from 3-point range and shot 47.4% from the field overall, building a 42-28 halftime lead that Madonna could only chip away at in stretches.

Madonna's biggest push came out of the locker room. Terre'ya Moore opened the third quarter with a layup at the 9:07 mark to cut the deficit to 12, and later buried a 3-pointer with 4:56 left in the quarter to bring the Crusaders within 49-38, their first single-digit margin since the opening minutes. Northwestern Ohio answered each time, however, with Olivia Thompson connecting on a 3-pointer at 6:58 in the third and the hosts carrying a 57-47 edge into the fourth.
Moore led Madonna with a standout double-double, posting 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting to go with a game-high 14 rebounds and two assists. She was active on the glass as the Crusaders held a 38-35 edge in total rebounds, including 13 offensive boards that helped generate second-chance opportunities. Lizzy Liedel added 13 points and knocked down three 3-pointers, including back-to-back triples late in the second quarter that trimmed what had been a 20-point deficit to 42-28 at the break and another 3-pointer with 2:39 remaining in the fourth to make it 70-56.
Madonna showed stretches of disruptive defense, finishing with nine steals and four blocks while forcing 13 Northwestern Ohio turnovers. The Crusaders also outscored the Racers 19-15 in the third quarter, using their defensive pressure and work on the boards to stay within striking distance. A Moore layup early in the fourth quarter brought the score to 58-51 with 7:56 to play, but Northwestern Ohio responded with another perimeter-driven run to restore a comfortable cushion down the stretch.
Offensively, the Crusaders shot 39.4% from the field (26-for-66) and 27.8% from 3-point range (5-for-18). Madonna's biggest missed opportunity came at the free-throw line, where the Crusaders went just 3-for-6, while Northwestern Ohio capitalized by converting 9 of 11 attempts. Despite generating more field-goal attempts and winning the rebounding battle, Madonna was ultimately undone by the Racers' efficiency and volume from long range coupled with 15 turnovers.
Thompson paced Northwestern Ohio with 18 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, knocking down four 3-pointers to orchestrate the Racers' attack. Jordan Mueller added 17 points and four assists, while Sanaiiya Gray contributed 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals, including an early 3-pointer that helped spark the first-quarter separation. The contest was officiated by Ronnie Branch, Lori Francescon and Asia Glenn; attendance was listed as zero.

UP NEXT:
Madonna will look to build on the improved second-half effort and strong individual outings from Moore and Liedel as the Crusaders continue conference play and seek to turn competitive stretches into complete games. The Crusaders will be back in action on Saturday, February 7th as they continue their road trip to Southfield, Mich. to take on Lawrence Tech University. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
