Crusaders Split Second Day of Clarke Invitational

DUBUQUE, Iowa, -- The Madonna University Crusaders continued play at the Clarke Tournament on Saturday, August 24, earning a dramatic 3-2 reverse sweep over Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) before falling 3-1 to Waldorf University (Iowa).


GAME ONE: Crusaders Reverse Sweep Fighting Bees

In a five-set thriller, Madonna overcame an early deficit to secure a comeback win against Saint Ambrose. After dropping the first two sets, the Crusaders stormed back to take the next three, sealing the 3-2 victory.

Saint Ambrose opened strong, winning the first set 25-21 and edging out the second 26-24. Madonna responded in dominant fashion, capturing the third set 25-16 and the fourth 25-13 to even the match. In the decisive fifth set, the Crusaders controlled the momentum, closing out the win 15-6.

Kira Buza paced the Crusaders with 14 kills and four service aces. Paige Caradonna added 10 kills and five blocks, while Alyviah Wright chipped in 11 kills. On the defensive side, Katie Mulka tallied 10 blocks, and Lexa Forti anchored the back row with 22 digs. Setter Rylie Glass directed the offense with 45 assists.


GAME TWO: Madonna Drops Final Game in Iowa to Waldorf

In the final match of the tournament, Madonna was unable to sustain its momentum, falling to Waldorf in four sets.

The Warriors took control early, claiming the first set 25-15. The Crusaders answered in the second, rallying to a 25-19 win. However, Waldorf regained control, capturing the next two sets 25-16 and 25-13 to secure the 3-1 victory.

Buza again led Madonna with 13 kills while also contributing defensively. Mulka added four blocks, and Wright recorded seven kills in the effort.


UP NEXT:

With Saturday's results, Madonna moves to 3-1 on the season. The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, September 3, traveling to Lawrence Technological University for their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) opener, match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
