DUBUQUE, IOWA -- The Madonna University Crusaders kicked off their volleyball season with emphatic victories over the Indiana University Northwest Red Hawks as well as the Clarke University Pride. The Crusaders swept both teams they faced Friday night, marking a 2-0 start for the first time since 2022 season.
GAME ONE: Crusaders Triumph Red Hawks in Season Opener
The first set saw the Crusaders take a decisive lead, finishing at 25-17. The team continued to show their dominance in the second set, though the Red Hawks put up a tough fight, the set concluded at 25-22 in favor of Madonna. By the third set, the Crusaders sealed their victory with a commanding 25-14 score, underscoring their superior play on the court.
Key players significantly contributed to the success of the Crusaders.
Kira Buza led with an impressive 16 kills, followed by
Hope Schriber and
Alyviah Wright who contributed six and five kills respectively. The defense was equally strong with
Katie Mulka recording 4 blocks and
Gwen Clifford adding three. Buza also shone on defense with two blocks and contributed on the service line with three aces, matched by teammates
Kem Donnelly and
Madelena Arriaga.
The game also highlighted exceptional backcourt performances, with
Lexa Forti leading with 13 digs and
Kem Donnelly close behind at nine. Buza added eight digs to her all-around performance. Setting duties were admirably handled by
Rylie Glass who racked up 31 assists, proving crucial in setting up offensive plays.
GAME TWO: Crusaders Sweep Pride in Second Game of the Day
In a commanding performance during their volleyball match, the Madonna University Crusaders secured a decisive 3-set victory against Clarke University Pride. The Crusaders showcased their dominance, winning with set scores of 25-17, 25-17, and a closely contested 25-23 in the final set.
From the onset, the Crusaders dictated the pace, with a strong offensive showing in the first set.
Kira Buza led the way with 12 kills for the match, contributing significantly to the early advantage.
Hope Schriber and
Alyviah Wright also played crucial roles, tallying nine and six kills respectively. Defensive strength was not lacking either, as
Katie Mulka led with five blocks, supported by Buza and Schriber.
As the match progressed to the second and third sets, Clarke attempted to mount a comeback, closing in during the third set with a razor-thin margin. However, the Crusaders' cohesion and skilled play, highlighted by impressive digs from
Lexa Forti, fortified their position and secured the win. The serving game was robust as well, with Buza notching three aces.

Looking ahead, the Crusaders are set to face Saint Ambrose University and Waldorf University on the same day, aiming to continue their strong start to the season.
