Crusaders put up season high in runs against the Wolverines

LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Madonna University baseball team (13-10, 5-0) faced off against WHAC opponent the University of Michigan-Dearborn (1-23, 0-4) on Friday afternoon. Each game was a complete offensive showing from the Crusaders, putting up 46 runs over two games. The Crusaders would win game one 23-4 and take game two 23-13 in seven innings.

Game 1:

Entering game one the Crusaders looked to get the offense going and build up momentum heading into a matchup with a top conference matchup with UNOH on Sunday. The Crusaders would do just that putting up a season high of runs in both games. The Crusaders put up runs in a bunch of different ways starting with a two run homerun from Kooper Etheridge in the bottom of the first. Then in the third inning the Crusaders would put up nine runs and bat through the lineup with everyone getting a hit and an RBI except for Jason Serafinchon who was hit by a pitch. The Crusaders would pick up another seven runs in the 6th inning with three runs coming from an Aiden Shipman three RBI double to make the score 23-3. Carson Collins would get the start on the mound going four innings giving up four hits and picking up three strikeouts on 66 pitches.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Kyle Revere would go 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a double, and a triple.
  • Etheridge would go 3-for-3 with four RBIs, two doubles and a homerun.
  • Payton Mazzola would go 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a double, and a triple.

Game 2:

In game two, the story was much of the same but the Wolverine offense was able to find some momentum early on. After the Wolverines put up three runs in the top of the first the Crusaders would answer with five runs in the bottom of the first after a Luke Spicer single would bring across one run and a Justin Starkey double would bring across two runs to give the Crusaders a 5-3 lead. The Wolverines would then answer in the top of the second with three runs of their own to make it a 6-5 ballgame. From there it was all Crusaders who would put up six runs in the bottom of the third and seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 18-6 lead heading into the sixth. The Wolverines would pick up two runs in the 6th and four runs in the 7th but the Crusaders had an answer to each scoring three runs in the sixth and then "walking off" the game in the bottom of the seventh off another Etheridge homerun to give the Crusaders a 23-13 lead and get the 10 run mercy rule in the seventh inning.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Bobby Cavin would go 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double
  • Starkey would go 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a double.
  • Spicer would go 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.

UP NEXT:
Madonna will be back in action on Sunday, March 23rd back at home to face off against first ranked WHAC opponent the University of Northwestern Ohio in a battle for the top spot in the WHAC. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
