Crusaders fall to the Racers

LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Madonna University baseball team (13-12, 5-2) faced off against top ranked WHAC opponent the University of Northwestern Ohio (17-8-1, 6-0) on Sunday afternoon. On a cold afternoon, the Crusaders struggled to warm the bats up in game one falling 9-1. Then in game two, some late Crusader errors and late push from the Racers gave the Crusaders a 9-8 loss in game two.

Game 1:

Entering game one the Crusaders looked to continue their hot offensive power from Friday but it would be the Racers who would come in with hot bats. The Racers would start the scoring in the top of the first inning putting up three runs to take an early 3-0 lead. The Racers would then put up two more runs in the top of the third to make it 5-0. The Crusaders would finally get an answer in the bottom of the third putting up one run on a Kyle Revere single that would bring home Ty Stepek. From there it was all Racers as that would be the only run the Crusaders would put up.  The Crusaders would have chances leaving seven stranded on base but were just unable to bring them home. The Crusaders would fall in game one 9-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Revere would go 2-for-3 with one RBI and a stolen base.
  • Alex Duley would go six innings with 4 strikeouts on 92 pitches.
  • Payton Mazzola would go 1-for-3 with a single.

Game 2:

Game two would come down to the final out as the Crusaders looked to get a ninth inning walk off to try and steal game two from the Racers.  Unlike game one, this game started with the Crusaders scoring first in the bottom of the first and the second to take an early lead. In the bottom of the first it was a pair of doubles from Revere and Kooper Etheridge that would get an RBI for each of them and bring across two runs to take the early 2-0 lead. The Racers would get a run of their own in the top of the second but the Crusaders would respond after a passed ball, a sacrifice fly and a RBI single from Ty Stepek would drive across three more runs for the Crusaders to take a 5-1 lead after two innings. The Racers would then pick up two more runs in the top of the third to make it a 5-3 game which is where this game would remain through the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Then in the bottom of the seventh Bobby Cavin would lead the inning off with a single where he would be pinch run for by Aiden Shipman. Shipman would then steal second and then advance to third on a wild pitch to put him on third with no outs. The Racers would then get two big outs but another wild pitch would allow Shipman to score to get a much needed run for the Crusaders and make it a 6-3 ballgame. Then the Racers would come to life picking up three runs in the 8th and three in the 9th to take the lead at 9-6. The Crusaders would head into the bottom of the ninth needing three runs to tie and four to walk it off. The bottom of the ninth started with Shipman reaching first on an error getting the first batter on to start the rally for the Crusaders. Then a walk would put runners on first and second with just one out. Luke Spicer would then get a huge single to drive across Shipman and cut the lead to just two with still only one out. Spicer would then steal second to put runners on second and third but after a Crusader strikeout and an intentional walk the bases would be loaded with two outs for Johnny Stepek with a chance to tie or win the game. Stepek would get a single but it would only bring across one run leaving the game up to Logan Ellis to tie the game or walk it off with bases loaded. Despite the Crusaders best efforts the Racers would get a big strikeout and win the game 9-8 stealing game two from the Crusaders at home and taking two big WHAC wins for the Racers to remain undefeated in the conference.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Revere would go 2-for-5 with an RBI and two doubles.
  • Jason Serafinchon would go 3-for-4 with a walk.
  • J. Stepek would go 2-for-5 with an RBI.
