Livonia, Mich. – Madonna baseball welcomed the Cougars of Cleary University to Ilitch Ballpark for a makeup series that was postponed due to weather this past Saturday. The Crusaders would complete a double-header sweep against Lawrence Tech in the home opener and looked to do the same against Cleary. Unfortunately, the Crusaders and Cougars would only finish one game as game one would take extra innings to complete. Luckily, Madonna would take home at least one victory against the Cougars in a Monday afternoon makeup.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Madonna and Cleary would battle back and forth for the entirety of the ball game. The game would remain a one score game up until the bottom of the fourth inning when
Luke Spicer triple to left center and bring in
Kyle Revere,
Aiden Shipman, and
Ty Stepek to give Madonna a 7-to-4 lead heading into the top of the fifth.
It wouldn't take long for the Cougars to tie the game up at seven when Brodie Mackay would send a ball over the fence in right field to bring in three runs. The Crusaders and Cougars would trade another pair of runs to bring the score to an 8-to-8 tie.
As a couple scoreless innings pass, the ultimate pressure moment would arise for the Crusaders as two outs were on the board and needed a hit desperately.
Bobby Cavin would be the man for the job and single to left center in the bottom of the tenth to bring in Shipman to tie the game at nine. Two innings later and the extra innings the hero Spicer would send a usual fly ball to right field, but the right fielder would be blinded by the sun and the ball would drop to his side. Revere would score and ultimately give Madonna the walk-off win.
The Crusaders and Cougars would end up starting the second game but not be able to complete it due to lack of sunlight. Game two of the double-header will be postponed until a further date.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Spicer would finish the day 2-for-4 at the plate and bring in five RBI's
- Ty Stepek and Revere would both steal two bases each in game one.
- Carson Collins would secure seven strikeouts in 3.2 innings of play.
UP NEXT:
Madonna will be back in action when the Wolverines of the University of Michigan-Dearborn pays a visit to Ilitch Ballpark on Saturday, March 22, 2025, for a double-header. The first pitch is set to happen at 1:00 PM.
