LIVONIA, Mich. – The Madonna Crusaders Women's Basketball team (12-13, 5-12) were back on home court tonight to take on the Aquinas College Saints (18-7, 15-2).
Known to perform well on the road with an away record of seven-and-one, the Saints would capture another win tonight, the final 62-54 as the Crusaders struggled to get their offense going.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Crusaders would be looking to come up big and snap the Saints ten-game win streak, the visiting side having a ten-and-one record to show in the New Year. Looking to snap a four-game losing streak, the home side would hope to generate some more offense and even the score after a close loss to the Saints in their first meeting in January.
Marcela Rodriguez would open the scoring for the home side with two, but the Saints would come out faster, shooting 4-for-7 from the field just under five minutes in. The Crusaders have not had a lot of success from the outside as of late, and the first quarter would remain consistent with that trend, shooting nine percent from the field in the first half of play.
Terre'ya Moore would check in late and try to get something going for the home side, putting up double digits in six of her last seven games. She would help the Crusaders even the score slightly, putting them down by five at the end of the first quarter. The Crusaders would continue to struggle to find a response, the Saints seeming to always have an answer. In the last few minutes of the second quarter, they would narrow the gap to six, down 24-to-30 at the end of the first half. Rodriguez would be the points leader at the halfway point with eight to show so far for the night, followed closely by
Chenelle King with six.
The margin would remain close at the beginning of the third, the Crusaders finally finding a response to the Saints, showing physicality in the paint and doing better defensively to shut down the visiting side. They would close out the third down by a slim margin of two, doing well from the line, remaining 100% from the line shooting 10-for-10 on free throws. They would continue to fight in the fourth, but would struggle to find the basket, putting up only seven points in the final quarter. It would come down to the wire, but the Saints would capture the win, the final 62-to-54.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Moore would end her night as points leader, with 13 and capturing five rebounds.
- Rodriguez would capture ten points, two assists, and two steals.
