LIVONIA, Mich. — The energy on the sidelines at Madonna University games was extra special this month as the Madonna University Cheerleading Team joined forces with the Sparkle and Shine Cheerabilities Team, a group of athletes with special needs, to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month and promote the power of inclusion through sport.
Proud to share the sidelines in front of Crusader Nation, two teams became one — united by a shared love for cheerleading, teamwork, and community. The collaboration was more than a moment of shared routines and chants; it was a celebration of confidence, acceptance, and belonging.

The Sparkle and Shine Cheerabilities Team, composed of athletes with varying abilities, showcased their talents alongside the Crusaders cheerleaders, demonstrating that cheerleading is truly for everyone. Smiles, high-fives, and pom-poms filled the sidelines as the teams performed synchronized routines, cheered on fans, and encouraged one another throughout the first quarter of the October 18th game.
Coaches and athletes from both programs emphasized how meaningful these experiences are — not only for the Sparkle and Shine athletes but also for the university cheerleaders who gain perspective and pride from the partnership.

From the pre-game warmups to the final cheer, the day was filled with laughter, empowerment, and shared joy. Each jump, chant, and smile told a story of courage and connection — proof that when everyone is given the chance to shine, the whole team wins.
As the season continues, the Madonna University Cheerleading Team and the Sparkle and Shine Cheerabilities Team hope to continue building bridges through the universal language of cheer — one routine, one smile, and one cheer at a time.
