Crusaders defeat Yellow Jackets in fourth quarter push

LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University Women's Basketball team (12-9, 5-8 WHAC) took down Defiance College (3-17, 1-12 WHAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders defeated the Yellow Jackets by pulling away late in the fourth quarter with a final of 61-47.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Crusaders really needed a win coming into this matchup with the Yellow Jackets not only to break the losing streak but also to gain momentum heading towards the end of the season and into the conference tournament. Madonna found themselves up early despite the shooting woes from both teams shooting a combined 18% from the field. Despite that, the Crusaders pulled down 7 offensive rebounds and went 4-6 from the free throw line to take an 11-8 lead after the first. In the second quarter the Crusaders picked up their shooting percentage but it was the free throw line where they increased their lead by going 7-10 from the line led by LaZae Mosley who went 3-4 from the line. The Crusaders would head into halftime with a 26-18 lead.

In the third quarter the Yellow Jackets offense started to come alive but the Crusaders always seemed to have an answer even taking as much as a 14 before the Yellow Jackets brought it back down to 7 to end the third quarter. Heading into the fourth the Crusaders defense really started to come alive holding the Yellow Jackets to just 9 fourth quarter points. Meanwhile, the Crusaders offense took off again going 8-15 from the field with 7 of the 8 field goals being assisted. Efficient offense and tenacious defense helped the Crusaders to take home a 61-47 victory.
