Crusaders fall to the Cardinals in close matchup

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Madonna University Women's Basketball team (11-9, 4-8 WHAC) traveled to Concordia University (8-9, 7-4 WHAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders fell to the Cardinals in a heartbreaker 65-66.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Crusaders came out looking to get back in the win column after a tough five game losing streak. Madonna found themselves up early midway through the first half until a 9-0 run from the Cardinals, the Crusaders found themselves down eight to end the first quarter. The second quarter was back and forth with the Cardinals maintaining their eight point lead until an individual 6-0 run by Chenelle King to end the half leaving the Crusaders down 30-36.

In the third quarter both teams struggled putting the ball in the basket but with six minutes left in the third the Crusaders brought the game to within one. Then the Cardinals would go on a 12-0 run to end the third giving the Cardinals a 52-41 lead heading into the fourth. Heading into the fourth the Crusaders were down but not out having one of their best scoring quarters of the season led by Keairra Jennings who would lead the team with 13 points in the quarter on 5-7 shooting. The entire quarter was a slow fight for the Crusaders going on four and six point spurts to slowly cut the lead until they took a one point lead with just 20 seconds left. After a Crusader foul with 8 seconds left the Cardinals took back a one point lead after a pair of made free throws leaving the Crusaders with the last shot. Jennings would take the inbound and head straight for the basket with a good look at the rim but the ball would just go in and out and the Crusaders would fall to the Cardinals 65-66.
