Crusaders Take First Two Games from Wolverines

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Madonna University baseball team took both games in their series with the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday afternoon. In game one the Crusaders would win 11-5 and in game two would win 11-1.   

Game 1:

Entering game one the Crusaders looked to bounce back after the Cornerstone series and get over .500 in the WHAC against the Wolverines of Michigan-Dearborn. The Crusaders would come out hot in game one picking up five runs in the first inning on a wild pitch, a Logan Ellis two RBI double, and a Luke Spicer two RBI single to take the early 5-0 lead. The Crusaders would pick up another run in the 3rd inning on a Spicer RBI sac fly to give the Crusaders a 6-0 lead after three. After a run from the Wolverines in the 4th, the Crusaders would pick up three more runs in the 5th to make it a 9-1 ball game after five. The Wolverines would score three runs in the fifth inning, trying to claw their way back but it would be all Crusaders in game one as they would pick up a run in the 6th and 7th innings to take the 11-5 victory.  Hayden Bailey would pick up the start in game one going 4.2 innings with 5 strikeouts. Nick Torrez would come in to finish the game going 2.1 innings with two strikeouts and only one earned run.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

 
  • Payton Mazzola would go 3-4 with a double, one RBI, 3 runs scored, and 2 stolen bases.
  • Anthony Sharkas would go 1-4 with 2 RBI's and a run scored.
  • 8 out of 9 Crusaders would pick up a hit in this game totaling up to 12 hits as a team

Game 2:

The Crusaders looked to complete the sweep and follow up the performance they had in game one and they were able to do just that but even better. The Crusaders were able to put up nine runs in the first two innings including a big three run homerun in the first from Nick Sandiha Jr. in the first inning. The Crusaders would continue to dominate throughout the game having another huge inning in the 6th where they picked up a total of six runs. The Crusaders picked up 16 hits with 15 RBI's as a team which also included two homeruns. Logan Ellis got the start on the mound for game two where he would go three innings allowing only three hits with one strikeout.

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Mazzola would go 4-5 with a double, a triple, 2 RBI's, and a stolen base.
  • Nick Krol would go 2-3 with 3 RBI's and pick up his first homerun of the year.
  • Kyle Revere would go 2-5 with 3 RBI's.

Madonna will be back in action Sunday, April 7th for a rematch series with the University of Michigan Dearborn. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
