Softball races to top of WHAC with dominate sweep of UNOH

LIMA, Ohio. - Coming off their sweep of the Wolverines, the No. 20 Crusaders' softball team (30-3, 8-0) ventured south of the state border to face the Racers of Northwestern Ohio (22-10, 9-1) in a matchup with significant repercussions for Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. After a masterclass from pitcher Maeson Schlaud in game one to shut out the No. 2 team in the WHAC and steal a 2-0 victory, the Crusaders would explode in the second game, racing to the mercy rule with a 19-run showcase. Crusaders stay atop the WHAC, remaining undefeated in conference play.

GAME ONE:

Freshman shortstop Ashley Rosiewicz was the first Crusader to get on base in game one with a single to left field. An error by the Racers' left fielder led to Rosiewicz having an opportunity to round third during the next at bat. The lone run by Rosiewicz put the Crusaders up 1-0 after one inning.

With the first at bat of the second inning, senior infielder Emily Biggott ripped a single into right field to get on base. An RBI single from freshman center fielder Faith Peschke brought Biggott home as the Crusaders jumped ahead 2-0 after two innings.

The Crusaders offense would stall out following their first two innings, but pitcher Maeson Schlaud would hold the Racers scoreless to keep the Crusaders' lead alive.

The Crusaders would take the 2-0 victory and secure the win for game one of the series.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Schlaud threw nine strikeouts while only allowing five hits through seven innings on the mound.
  • Biggott and Rosiewicz each went 1-for-3 with one run.
GAME TWO:

After pitching the entirety of game one, Schlaud would return to the mound for the second half of the series just thirty minutes later.

Taking the plate first, the Crusaders absolutely dominated the Racers' pitching staff in the opening inning, robbing them of twelve runs before the Racers even had an at-bat. Eight different Crusaders would score in the top of the first, taking a 12-0 lead and giving Schlaud a break before taking the mound for the first time in game two.

Peschke would add on a run in the top of the second, but the Racers would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to make it a 13-1 game.

The Crusaders would get back on track offensively in the third inning, as sophomore DH Jessica Dunkel, junior catcher Mackenzie Ming, and Biggott would all contribute runs as the lead was extended to 16-1.

In the top of the fourth, Ming would add to her nearly conference-leading number of home runs with a solo shot over the left field fence, extending the Crusader lead by one. Senior first baseman Bailey Martin would score her first run of the day before the inning's third out, while Biggott would cross home for the third time in game two; the Crusader lead extending to 19-1.

The Racers would add on one garbage-time run in the top of the fourth inning, but it would not be enough to stop the Crusaders from securing the sweep in five. Crusaders took a loud 19-2 victory in possibly their most impressive conference win thus far into the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ming went 2-of-2, with four runs, two RBIs and one homer.
  • Biggott went 3-of-3 at the plate, scoring three runs and two RBIs.
  • Martin led the team with four RBIs and scored one run.
  • Freshman outfielder Regan Finkbeiner scored two runs and three RBIs.
  • Every Crusader starter scored at least one run.
