Softball stays undefeated after sweep of Rochester

LIVONIA, Mich. - Following their 10-0 start to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play, the No. 20 Crusaders' softball team (32-3, 19-0) hoped to keep that streak alive against the Rochester Christian Warriors (2-25, 0-14). While the first game of the series would be all Crusaders, the Warriors would give them a challenge in game two. A walk-off double from catcher Mackenzie Ming would help them secure their second-straight mercy win of the day. They would take an 8-0 victory in game one and a 9-1 win in game two to remain undefeated in conference play with only five regular season series left before the WHAC tournament.

GAME ONE:

Lead-off hitter and outfielder, junior Alissa Gauthier, got the game started with an infield single. A single by freshman shortstop Ashley Rosiewicz would bring Gauthier home for the first run of the game. Rosiewicz would make it home herself before the inning's end following a failed pick-off. Crusaders led 2-0 after one inning.

After a quiet second inning, the Crusaders would explode in the bottom of the third with six runs scored before the third out. Sophomore pinch runner Lucy Benin, senior third base Emily Biggott, freshman outfielder Faith Peschke, senior first base Bailey Martin, and freshman outfielder Regan Finkbeiner all scored their first runs of the day, in addition to Gauthier scoring her second.

On the mound, senior pitcher Maeson Schlaud would hold off the Warriors, throwing a no-hitter through the first four innings. Laci Harris would relieve her in the fifth inning, holding the Warriors scoreless as the Crusaders took an 8-0 victory after a five-inning mercy.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Gauthier went 2-of-2 with two runs and two RBIs.
  • Rosiewicz scored one run and recorded two RBIs.
  • Schlaud threw eight strikeouts in four innings while not allowing a hit.
GAME TWO:

After getting shut out in game one, Rochester would score first and take a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

The Crusaders would only get going offensively in the third inning, where things would take off. A six-run rally from freshman second base Ella Thomas, Peschke, Finkbeiner, Gauthier, sophomore DP Jessica Dunkel, and Rosiewicz, put the Crusaders up 6-1 after three innings.

Martin would get her first run of the game and second of the day in the fifth inning after being hit home by Peschke to extend the Crusader lead to 7-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, junior catcher Mackenzie Ming would walk things off with a two-RBI double, putting the mercy rule into effect. Crusaders won 9-1 and moved to 12-0 in conference play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Rosiewicz went 3-of-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
  • Finkbeiner went 2-of-3 with two runs.
  • Schlaud returned to the mound for game two, throwing another eight strikeouts.
UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will hit the road tomorrow as they head across the state to face the Saints of Aquinas College (28-6, 10-2) in Grand Rapids, Mich. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow, April 14th.
