Crusaders drop the Series against the Golden Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Madonna University baseball team lost both games in their series in with Cornerstone University on Saturday afternoon. In game one the Crusaders would lose 3-5 and in game two would lose 6-7.   

Game 1:

Entering game one the Crusaders looked to stay hot after sweeping Lourdes on Friday. The Golden Eagles would be the ones to strike first in the top of the first. The Crusaders would answer back in the bottom of the third on a two RBI single from Payton Mazzola to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead. Cornerstone would answer again in the top of the 5th after a two RBI single to again take the lead at 3-2. The Crusaders would answer right back in the bottom of the 5th off a Logan Ellis single that would score Mazzola to tie the game up at 3-3. Cornerstone would then retake the lead in the top of the 6th after a two RBI single with a 5-3 lead. The Crusaders would make it interesting in the bottom of the 7th after an Anthony Sharkas one out double but were unable to get the run across falling 5-3 in game one.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

 
  • Mazzola would go 2-4 with a run and 2 RBI's.
  • Sharkas would go 2-4 with a double.

Game 2:

The Crusaders looked to get back into the win column after a close one in game one and would find the upper hand on offense out hitting the Golden Eagles 11-7 but it would not be enough to pick up the win. The Crusaders would score first in the bottom of the 1st after Mazzola would lead off with a double and would be drove in by a Ellis ground out to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. Cornerstone would follow up with three runs in the top of the third but the Crusaders would match that in the bottom of the third with three runs of their own off a two RBI double from Nick Sandiha Jr. double followed up by a Joshua Medrano single to bring in Sandiha to make it a 4-3 game. The Golden Eagles would then put up two runs in the 4th and one run in the 5th to take a 6-4 lead. Then Crusaders would make things interesting with an RBI from Pablo Rebollar on a two out double followed by a RBI single from Cal Fournier to tie the game back up at 6-6 heading into the top of the 8th. In the top of the 8th the Golden Eagles would get a solo home run which would be the last run of the game handing the Crusaders a 7-6 loss in game two. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Mazzola would go 3-5 with a double and a stolen base.
  • Sandiha Jr. would go 3-4 with 2 RBI's and a double.
  • Rebollar would go 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI.


UP NEXT:
Madonna will be back in action Tuesday, April 7th for a single game matchup as they travel to Midland, Mich. to take on Northwood University. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
