Crusaders knocked off in WHAC Championship

LIVONIA, Mich. - A storybook matchup was set for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship game, between the No. 1 ranked Madonna Crusaders (25-5, 19-3) and the No. 2 ranked Cornerstone Golden Eagles (23-7, 17-5). Currently holding onto a thirteen-game win streak coming into tonight's matchup, the Golden Eagles would stay hot coming into ACCU Arena. Firing on all cylinders from start to finish, they would hand the Crusaders an 88-73 loss and steal their hopes at back-to-back WHAC Tournament trophies.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Crusaders got on the board first, with two quick layups from junior guard Isaac Anderson and junior center Matthew MacLellan. However, the Golden Eagles would quickly take the lead back and refuse to let up. Shooting nearly 50-percent from both the field and from three, the Golden Eagles would jump ahead to a 42-28 lead at halftime.

The Crusaders would try to regroup at halftime, but were unable to match the size and physicality of the Golden Eagles. While the Crusaders would shoot much better in the second half, the Golden Eagles would stay consistent, holding onto the lead by double-digits for a majority of play. They would hand the Crusaders a 88-73 loss and claim the 2023-24 WHAC Tournament title.

INSIDE NUMBERS:
  • Anderson scored 28 points with eight rebounds, two steals, and a dunk.
  • Brendan Young recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Ethan Emerzian scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting off the bench.
