Crusaders shut down Saints; secure first WHAC win of the season

LIVONIA, Mich. -  For their first home conference matchup of the 2024 season, the Crusaders' Men's Lacrosse team (4-3, 0-1) faced off against the No. 10 Siena Heights Saints (3-4, 0-0). From start to finish, the Crusaders had their way with the Saints, breezing to a 15-5 victory and getting their first conference win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Crusaders had an explosive first period, scoring five unanswered goals from five different players to open things up. Andrew Marszalek got them on the board first, followed by Ken Hill, then Marcus Dochenetz, Zachary Lane, and Reid Dunavant. In the final minutes of the quarter, the Saints would get on the board to try and answer their run. Crusaders led 5-1 after one quarter.

Opening up the second quarter, the Saints would go on a run to cut into the Crusaders' lead, nearly tying it up at 5-4. Two goals from Dunavant and one from Dylan Hicks would lead a 3-0 Crusader run to end the first half. The Crusaders extended their lead back to 8-4 going into halftime.

The Crusaders' run would continue into the third quarter with three unanswered goals. Eddie Dyla and Nick Bryden each scored their first goals while Dunavant scored his fourth goal. 

Bryden and Marszalek each scored their second goals of the game in the fourth quarter, while Carter Borsos and Joey Van Goethem each contributed one of their own. With that, the Crusaders would take a 15-5 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Dunavant led the team in points, scoring four goals with one assist.
  • Lane led the team in assists with three and scored one goal.
  • Bryden and Marszalek each scored two goals.
  • Goalkeeper Jeff Varner recorded 10 saves.
UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will remain home this weekend to face the Lourdes University Grey Wolves at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 30th at the Madonna Athletic Complex.
