Game Recap: Baseball |

Crusaders split the Series with #RV Midway Eagles

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The Madonna University baseball team split the series with no. RV Midway University on Friday, February 16th. In game one the Crusaders would lose 0-1 and in game two would win 4-2.

Game 1:

Entering game one the Crusaders looked to bounce back after a tough offensive day yesterday at Georgetown and in game one the struggles at the plate continued. The Crusaders were held hitless through the first 5 innings of the game but in the 6th inning would find some life from Payton Mazzola and Pablo Rebollar who each would get a single putting a man on first and second with no outs. Despite the good start to the inning the Crusaders were unable to drive in any runs and ended the inning on a double play. Undeterred from the offensive struggles the Crusaders continued to see strong pitching from their lineup as Carson Collins would get the start in game one. Midway would score one run in the first inning on two hits which would end up being the only hits Collins would give up all game. Collins would go all six innings giving up only two hits with 6 strikeouts on 81 pitches.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Mazzola would go 1-3 with a single.
  • Rebollar would go 1-3 with a single.

Game 2:

The Crusaders looked to get the bats hot in game two and were able to do just that, and were able to do it early. Mazzola would start the game with a leadoff single which then set up Kyle Revere to drive in the run on an error. Revere would then advance to third on a wild pitch and sacrifice bunt from Joshua Medrano which allowed Nick Krol to get the RBI on a double to right field giving the Crusaders a 2-0 lead at the end of the first. The Eagles would answer in the bottom of the first putting up a single run to make it a 2-1 game after the first inning. Then the Crusaders would score a run each in back to back innings. In the third inning Mazzola would lead off with a walk and then advance to third on a steal and wild pitch. Then Medrano would step up and drive in the run on a sacrifice fly to right field to make it a 3-1 game after three. Then in the fourth inning after a hit by pitch and a bunt for a hit by Johnny Stepek, Mazzola would be able to drive in an RBI on a fielder's choice to make it a 4-1 game. The Eagles would only get a run back in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 4-2 game. There would be no more scoring the rest of the game which was cut short due to weather but would still give the Crusaders a 4-2 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Mazzola would go 1-2 with 2 runs scored, an RBI, and 3 stolen bases.
  • Krol would go 1-2 with an RBI
  • Ryan Dusang would get the start for game two and would go 3.1 innings allowing two hits with two strikeouts on 51 pitches
