Nationally-ranked Saints get the best of the Crusaders

ADRIAN, Mich. - Coming off of their heartbreaking overtime loss on the road against Cornerstone, the Madonna Crusaders (9-10, 5-8) continued their road trip, this time to face the #RV Saints of Siena Heights University (17-2, 12-1). While the game started neck-and-neck, the Saints would go on to pull ahead in the end, taking a 74-42 win over the Crusaders.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Coming off of a 41-point performance on the road against Cornerstone, Crusader guard Aaliyah McQueen drained a three to give the Crusaders their first points of the game. The Saints would go on an early run, but freshman Ashley Kopacko would tie the game up at 6-6 with a three-pointer of her own. Following her first basket, Kopacko would score in the paint on the Crusaders' next possession to give them their first lead of the game at 8-6.

The Saints would reclaim the lead for a moment, but McQueen would quickly knock down her second three-pointer of the night to take it back at 11-10 with just over four minutes left in the first quarter. Kayiona Willis would follow up with her first basket of the day to extend the Crusader lead to three. However, the Saints would go on a run to end the first half, taking a 43-26 lead over the Crusaders heading into the break.

Coming out in the second half, it was evident that the Crusaders made some defensive adjustments as they held the Saints to just 13 points in the quarter. Three-pointers from Willis and Delani Robinson to close out the quarter would help the Crusaders continue to cut into the deficit.

Despite the Crusaders being able to continue limiting the Saints' offense in the fourth quarter, they were unable to rally a late-game comeback. The Saints would go on to secure a 74-42 win over the Crusaders.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • McQueen led the team with 15 points and nine rebounds, shooting 3-of-5 from three.
  • Kopacko scored eight points and was 2-of-4 from behind the arc.
  • Willis also recorded double-digits with 10 points.
