Crusaders fall to Golden Eagles on the road

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Coming off of their nail-biting victory over Indiana Tech, the Madonna Crusaders (15-3, 11-1) headed across the state to face the Cornerstone Golden Eagles (11-7, 7-5) in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup. While the Crusaders started off hot, the Golden Eagles would take over late in the first half, holding on through the second half to take an 86-76 victory over the Crusaders.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Brendan Young got the game started with a three-pointer off of an assist from Devin Dunn to get the Crusaders on the board first. Young followed that up with another bucket from behind the arc before Dunn got a basket of his own. The Crusaders were off to an 8-2 lead in the opening minutes, but the Golden Eagles began to fight back. The Crusaders continued to roll offensively, but the Golden Eagles kept them from pulling away early. During the first ten minutes, the Crusaders appeared to be steadily in control of the game.

However, the Golden Eagles would take their first lead of the night twelve minutes into the game. Once they took the lead away from the Crusaders, the script seemed to flip almost immediately, as the Golden Eagles were now in firm control of the game for the remainder of the half. Cornerstone began to pull away in the final minutes, but two free throws from Isaac Anderson would cut their lead to six before the buzzer. The Golden Eagles led 39-33 at the halftime break.

Cornerstone continued to stay hot in the second half, refusing to let up as they steadily pulled away from the Crusaders. In the end, they would go on to hand the Crusaders just their second conference loss of the season as the Golden Eagle took the 86-76 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Young led the team with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 67-percent from behind the arc.
