Crusaders edge out Cougars in first-ever matchup

LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna Crusaders (8-7, 4-5) returned home to ACCU Arena following their road loss to Lawrence Tech, taking on the Cleary University Cougars (2-13, 2-7) in the first ever matchup between these two teams. In a tough back-and-forth matchup, the Crusaders came out on top thanks to a game-sealing three by sophomore guard Ashley Hill in the final seconds of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Crusaders scored the first points of the game with a pair of free throws from sophomore Delani Robinson. The Crusaders would strike first but Cleary was able to climb back, outscoring Madonna in the first quarter 16-9.

Following the first intermission, the Crusaders came out in the second quarter ignited with a new fire. In an explosive run they outscored the Cougars 19-11 in the second quarter to take back the lead and go into halftime up 28-27.

The back-and-forth battle continued in the second half, but the Crusaders would pull away with a last-second three-pointer from sophomore Ashley Hill. The Crusaders closed out the Cougars 68-62.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Aaliyah McQueen came up big with a 22-point double-double to lead the Crusaders to victory.
  • LaZae Mosley also recorded a double-double with 12 points and an astounding 13 rebounds.
  • Hill scored 13 points including the game-sealing three-pointer.
  • Robinson also found herself in double-digits with 12 points.

The Crusaders will head to Grand Rapids to face the Saints of Aquinas College (7-8, 4-5) as they continue to fight for their spot in the postseason. The tip is set for 5:30 pm on Wednesday, January 17th at Alksnis Athletics & Recreation Building.
