SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Led by
Brendan Young, the Madonna University men's basketball team escaped Lawrence Tech University with an 82-81 victory over the host Blue Devils on Wednesday evening. Young became the 18th Crusader in program history to surpass 1,000 career points in the win, doing so in just his 78th career game at Madonna. The win also pushes the Crusaders to 12-3 overall and 8-1 in WHAC play, while LTU falls to 8-7 overall and 5-5 in the WHAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After the Blue Devils scored the opening basket, back to back three-pointers by Ryan Nunn gave the visiting Crusaders an early 6-2 advantage. Lawrence Tech eventually tied things at 16-16 with 12:03 remaining in the first half, but a 12-3 run put the Crusaders up nine with a little more than five minutes left. Madonna maintained their lead the rest of the first half, and went into halftime up 39-32. The Crusaders as a team shot 13-of-30 from the field in the first 20 minutes, while Isaac Anderson led Madonna with eight points.
A layup by Brandon Beavers of LTU made it a two-point game with 17:56 left, however a layup by Matthew MacLellan and a three-pointer by Young put the Crusaders up seven with 16:45 left. Back-to-back three pointers by Young put Madonna up 52-43 with 14:53 to go, and you might've thought Madonna had put the Blue Devils away. The lead grew to 11 with 12:55 left, but LTU didn't back down. Aaron Dolny hit a three for the Blue Devils with 11:52 to go and make it just a five point game. The Crusaders responded following a timeout with a 10-2 run to go ahead by 13 points, their largest lead of the night. Again the Blue Devils responded, and found themselves down 72-70 with 5:13 left in regulation. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way, with Madonna using an 8-3 run to go up seven with 2:10 remaining.
In the final two minutes, LTU cut the deficit to just four following a three-pointer by Dolny. With under a minute remaining, a pair of free throws by Alejandro Gonzalez made it a two point game. On probably the biggest play of the night, the Crusaders went back down the floor and Young was able to drop a layup in the basket off an assist by Devin Dunn. LTU however answered with a three-pointer to make it 82-81 with 22 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, Young was fouled by the Blue Devils. Despite missing the crucial free throw, the Blue Devils attempt at the game-winning layup was unable to fall and Madonna escaped with the road victory.
