Madonna Uses Late Surge to Get Past UM-Dearborn

LIVONIA, Mich. -- The Madonna University men's lacrosse team bounced back with an 18-6 senior day victory over the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday. 

Prior to the game, Madonna honored the senior class of Josh Hilton, Nick Conrad, Kent Westrick, and Vince Floro. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first period was full of action, as Madonna outscored UM-Dearborn 5-3. Shane Alexander scored the first Crusader goal. Alexander added another goal in the period with 4:02 left, while Madonna also got goals from Zachary Lane and Vince Floro. Lane scored the final goal of the period with eight seconds remaining to give the Crusaders the two-goal advantage. 

In the second, Floro added his second goal of the game while Dylan Hicks, Teddy Mazaris, and Kyle Gudme added their names to the statsheet. The Wolverines were down 9-3 following Gudme's goal, but scored with 1:10 left in the half to go into the break down 9-4. 

The second half saw UM-Dearborn score twice to cut the deficit to just three with 7:44 to go in the third quarter. Madonna responded however by scoring the final nine goals of the game to put it away. During the 9-0 run, Conrad and Westrick added goals to the Crusader total. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Jeff Varner made 18 saves in net.
  • Mazaris and DeMario Williams each caused four turnovers.
  • Lane's three goals and four assists amounted to seven points on the day, while Alexander added six points.

Madonna is on the road for the remainder of the regular season, beginning with a big game at No. 5 Indiana Tech at 7:00 PM Saturday, April 15th.
