GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Madonna University women's basketball team hit the road to take on Aquinas College on Wednesday night. The Crusaders came up short in the WHAC contest, falling 49-44 to the host Saints.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Madonna started the game slowly, falling behind 12-5 after the opening quarter. The offense woke up in the second period, however, as the Crusaders outscored the Saints 13-12 and trailed 24-18 heading into the locker room.

The second half began with Madonna going on a 6-0 run to tie things at 24-24. Free throws by Sophie Ruggles and a layup by Ashley Hill allowed Madonna to get back into the game. The teams continued to trade baskets throughout the third quarter before Aquinas opened up a 10-point lead and led 37-27 heading to the fourth. 

In the fourth, the Crusaders found themselves trailing by 11 points before three-point baskets by Delani Robinson and Brooklyn Ragland cut the deficit to just five. Madonna was unable to get any closer unfortunately, and Aquinas escaped with the victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 

• Hill posted 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Madonna.
• Sophie Ruggles grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
• Delani Robinson had 10 points
