CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Madonna University Women's lacrosse team started their 2022 season with a trip to Thomas More University this past Sunday. The Crusaders left Kentucky with a 17-7 win against the Saints, starting them 1-0 on the new season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Brittney Leist started the scoring for Madonna 26 seconds into the first quarter. The Crusaders wouldn't look back from that point on, taking an 8-3 lead into the half with goals from Leist, Aria Gettel, Arianna Rivera, and Christy Battersby. 

Draw controls and caused turnovers in the midfield helped the Crusaders score nine second-half goals. Madonna out shot the Saints 45-18, testing the Saints goalkeeper, Kennedy Yurt, who ultimately finished the day with 24 saves. The final was 17-7 for Madonna.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Christy Battersby, Brittney Leist, and Arianna Rivera led the Crusaders with four goals apiece
• Rivera adding 2 assists for a game-high 6 points total
• Aria Gettel and Jasmine Stringham led defensively with 4 caused turnovers each

Madonna faces No. 2 University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at home on Saturday, February 19th. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
