LIVONIA, Mich. - The Madonna University women's basketball team opened their 2022-23 season with an 81-51 loss to visiting Taylor University (Ind.).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Trojans opened the game with a 6-0 run before Delani Robinson got the Crusaders on the board in the opening quarter. Madonna was able to get within two points after a jumper by Ashley Hill, but Taylor closed the first period with an 8-0 run. 

In the second, the Trojans maintained their lead and led by as many as 22 points, before a three-pointer by Ti'Syn Callahan and a free throw by Paige Humerickhouse made the score 38-22 heading into the halftime locker room. 

The second half began with a three-pointer by Kalin Bates, before the Trojans went on a 7-0 run. Taylor was able to grow its lead to 28 points, before Madonna responded with a 10-0 run of their own.

However Taylor was able to build back its lead in the final quarter and earn the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 

• Callahan led the Crusaders with 15 points off the bench. 
• Paige Humerickhouse had nine points and was 7-10 from the free throw line. 
• Ashley Hill grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while posting eight points for Madonna. 
• Madonna was 16-of-58 from the field, 6-of-24 from three-point range, and 14-of-25 at the free throw line. 
• Leading the Trojans was Taylor Westgate with a game-high 30 points.
