Turnovers Doom Crusaders in Opening Outing

Box Score SOUTHFIELD, Mich.-- The Madonna University Football program fell 26-7 in the 2021 season opener at Blue Devils Stadium at the hands of Lawrence Technological University (Mich.) for a loss in Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League play.

Lawrence Tech started out with possession with the ball on their 37 yard-line, going three-and-out as Dalen Cobb and Julius Adams' sack shut down any chance of shifting the ball. With Madonna in possession, the first-first down of the game came behind Nick Hastings' catch from Luke Pfromm for a 17 yard gain.

Both teams would go blow-for-blow for the first quarter with a few first-downs here and there until things sparked for the Crusaders early in the second.

FIRST LEAD IN PROGRAM HISTORY

The two teams met at a stalemate for the first fifteen minutes as the quarter wound down with the score 0-0. But just 1:18 later, an errand pass by the Blue Devil quarterback saw the ball hit Cortland Cochran right between the numbers as he weaved through pursuing white jerseys for the first-ever INT-touchdown, a return of 69 yards.

LAST SECONDS BEFORE HALF / SECOND HALF

This lead would last until six seconds left in the second quarter as LTU completed a pass that would tie up the game at 7-7 apiece as both teams broke for halftime.

The Blue Devils would then go on a 19-0 run through the final 30 minutes but not without trouble via the Madonna defense. Many times, the Crusaders were pinned within the ten or fifteen yard line but prevailed behind Cobb, Jesse Morris and many missed LTU field goals.

At the end of regulation, the scoreboard read: Blue Devils 26, Madonna 7.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Pfromm finished the day 9-17 for 114 yards and a single interception to his credit while Max Morris finished 2-9 for 30 yards and one interception as well. On the ground, Mathias gained 30 yards on seven attempts with a long of 23 yards.

Garrett found himself yet again as the team leader in receptions with four catches for 62 yards for an average 15.5. Garrett reached a long of 33 while Klayton Cornell had one reception for the team's longest catch at 40 yards.

On the defensive end, Cobb accounted for six total takes, two of which solo to compliment Morris' eight total tackles. Jarrett Railing and Adams both were able to get to the quarterback for two sacks on the day.

Of course, it can't go without mention of Cochran's pick-six interception, returning to the house for 69 yards.
