FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The Madonna University Crusaders baseball team traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana for the opening round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament for a couple of games against University of Michigan - Dearborn and Indiana Tech University.Â
GAMEÂ RECAP
TURNING POINT
- Crusaders scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on back-to-back pinch hit singles from Joey Pejuan and Alex Nicholson.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Wolverines were able to get on the board first right away with three runs in the first inning. Michigan - Dearborn was able to take advantage of a double down the right field line and two straight bases loaded walks in order to go up 3-0 after the first
- The Crusaders would get one of those runs back in the second inning on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Ryan Celmer.
- Michigan - Dearborn scored their fourth run of the game in the fourth inning on a balk by the Crusader pitcher Nate Blain.
- Jace Matkin was able to continue his hot streak at the end of the season hitting his fourth home run in the teams last five games. Madonna kept it up in the inning being able to grab another run back on a Gordon Ferguson single through the left side of the infield as he scored Noah Moore. At the end of the fourth the score was 4-3 in favor of the Wolverines.Â
- The next action in the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Crusaders were able to take a two-run lead. Pejuan came up in the eighth as a pinch hitter with runners on second and third and hit a game tying single through the left side of the infield. Nicholson came up in another pinch hitting situation and was able to give the Crusaders the lead 6-4 on another single through the left side.Â
NUMBERS TO KNOW
- The Crusaders were three for three in pinch hit situations in the second half of the game as Pejuan and Nicholson were able to bring in the final three Crusader runs.Â
TOP PERFORMERS
- Ferguson had a solid day from the plate hitting .750 with a double and a couple of singles, including an RBI single in the fourth.Â
- Victor Mencotti earned the win in the game today throwing four innings in relief. He gave up three hits while striking out four batters.Â
- Matkin had a solo shot in the fourth inning that scored the second Crusader run.Â

UP NEXT
- With the rain delays throughout Thursday games, the Crusaders will now play their second game on Friday, May 7 with first pitch at 4 PM. The Warriors and Wolverines will play at 1 PM.Â
